Vanity the quality of people who have too much pride in their own appearance, abilities, achievements, etc. : the quality of being vain.
project an individual or collaborative enterprise that is carefully planned and designed to achieve a particular aim.
The term vanity project can be used in many contexts but in this case I make the point that if you make an online gaming server not for the players but to demonstrate your technical skill or to realize some abstract ideal and also don't care if your players are happy or if they get bored or whatever, then yeah it applies.

Free DaoC usually makes me happy. If it was about ego and showing off, I'd think you would enter some kind of big programming contest or something else that is going to get a lot of attention rather than cater to what is essentially an underground community...

Really starting to feel sorry for everyone and sorry for myself. It's been way too long..You can't do something like this to us. The people don't deserve this. We are good people

Poor Uthgard.... high potential but not even exploited.
It's free and it's done when it's done, we all understand thats, but the server was closed too long for now w/o any real news.
If there is no real leader in the team, you're not going forward.

So my question is: will you continue to blindly follow these GMs as they do nothing to alter history, and offer at-the-moment false promises of this majestical new server with implementations that have been not even remotely discussed, or do we as a community of players--the SAME community that saw 1500 players on Genesis @ launch despite it being the ****** server EVER--move our support to a different project that promises to listen to us and offer us a level of transparency that justifies our monthly donations and time spent crawling through archives to help the team?
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Everybody check out the server Lethantis! Nice looking server with a heck of a team over there coding it.
I just made an account on Lethantis. They have barrels.. and the Gm was willing to actually sit down and personally answer a few questions I had lol. I was baffled. But devout now as well.

That ´s time calculation of Abydos is something we can work with, I ´m personally not unhappy when beta is released in autum and Uthgard in winter, much time to play then because of the bad weather. About the donations , staff never asked for it or made any promises, it ´s cool some ppl doing still donations, I´ll wait for it when the server is back again to save myself from frustration about the long time of waiting until I can play again. The proble is when I ´m paying money for something I want something back and I see these donations more as a payment for service, so the service is not available for me at the moment so I save my money until it is before I ´m getting upset. @ Trish I made already a list of the open points for grab bags at side 13, I think I got them all to save you some work. best regards Megrim
I want to clarify I didn't specify that - I gave two arbitrary time references. But people got upset the last time I said "infinity", so I picked something closer.

I have been testing for a while there. Looks promising and what I most like about their team is the background of the Devs. Also NO SI at all means the mainland will be poppin' so the population won't be scattered about, and also no BDs running around soloing full groups

I like everything about Uthgard. The patch level setting, the work devs put in trying to replicate the live server to the smallest detail. Only thing i dont like is the lack of transparency and communication. I cant figure out what the problem is tho? Its understandable that devs working on this on their free time, but it makes you wonder why would someone take on this challenge when they clearly dont have enough time in their busy lives to rebuild and bring back the server online in a reasonable time frame. Original estimation at the time of shutdown was 3 month of downtime, so how did this grow to a year and a half with no ETA in sight? It just serms that it isnt a priority to get completed either due to the lack of enthusiasm or other priorities.

"Original Estimation" Staff never gave any estimations, players did. Players said Around 3 months, and they did convince themselves, but i never saw a staff member telling that the server will back within 3 months when they took it down.
2012:<@[Uth]Abydos> If we don't have SI by the end of the year, Im fairly certain I wont be a GM anymore :-p

Not entirely true. On feb 1st 2014, Nayru posted a thread titled Revamp: Update where he said the following:
We still cannot estimate any potential release date for relaunching, but we will need one or two months for sure. We will keep you up to date! You can also follow our development progress... etc.
I wonder if more stuff was piled on that stretched the dowtime until present time? Did something happend where the team took a long break from it all (or still is) we probably will never find out. One thing is for sure - I dont think anyone on Uth staff expected to have downtime approaching two year mark.

People are getting frustrated. It's been months since there was actual news. The devs don't have to post any news, it's their choice, but it's only a matter of time before people give up checking. People want to play on their server, but right now they don't seem to want to listen to anyone. There are new servers being announced, and it may be that these servers become popular. If they do, it might be that when Uthgard is eventually released, people won't be interested, as they'll be invested in another server. This server is nothing without its players, and each week that goes by lessens the eventual player count.
