Hello everyone. I played DAoC a few years back, quit, and want to start again. I do not have a windows PC, but I can use an application called Cedega which supports the playing of DAoC on linux. This application is pretty reliable, and DAoC is one of the games supported by it's community so it *should* work. Has anyone managed to get this server to work using this method?

And my other questions: I have the DAoC cd's from around 2003 or so. Is there anywhere to download an up to date version of DAoc? or do I just download all of the patches.

Are expansions supported yet?

Without using a launcher, does DAoC see the Uthgard server? How does the launcher work? is it a standalone application?

Thanks in advance for all of your help, I'll be checking back on weekends, goodnight for now.

DAoC works fine under linux, but you should do the following things:

a) First, search the forum - There are quite some posts about daoc in linux there.

b) Second, you'll probably need to disable pixelshaders in the wine configuration for game.dll; otherwise the game will crash after some secs

c) And Last: You can't use daoc portal - And thereby you have to rely on the connect.bat/dolloader Tutorial postet somewhere else on this forum.

Should run fine then; at least got it working that way without any major problems (windowed mode)
Be nice. :)

Better forget Cedega and use Wine!

I used Cedega for months, but I always got crashs after a few hours playing. It seemed to be a memory leak in Cedega, because DAoC needed a lot of memory after a few hours running with Cedega. With Wine this was gone.
Additionally I had to restart Xorg once a day for a better performance in DAoC. Don't ask why! I tried much and that was an answer.

With Wine you'll get only one problem: You won't see any mouse pointer in DAoC. But there are some workarounds to solve this here in the forum and in the winehq.

Last but not least there were some graphical problems under Cedega with are gone with Wine, too:
As Metty said, you have to disable pixel shaders. Thats right for Wine, but not Cedega. I tested several settings of pixel and vertex shaders in Cedega. Either you'll get missing textures in TNN and broken polygons in DF, or you'll get broken polygons on BD pets that will crash the game.

See this for further infos about the mouse patch: http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?iVersionId=6307
And search in this board for 'wine' and 'mouse'. I think there was one guy who published a compiled lib somewhere here.

Thanks alot for the help and advice so far guys. I looked at the other topics and
(wishing I could speak more German) tried to configure wine properly. I do have one problem though:

I downloaded DaoC LOTM from http://daoc.goa.com/en/ then ran it in Cedega using engine 6.1.0, it updated, told me to restart updater, I did, and it tried to update to version 1.9.1 it stopped and said "cannot parse product update information" and after trying more times it started downloading, then said to "Wait a while and try connecting again", or check internet settings. I tried some more times and it said "could not complete product update"and to try again later or check internet settings

Then I tried to run the same thing in Wine, and it started updating to 1.9.1, but got this error message every time. I then tried to get launchers for every other expansion pack, Catacombs for example, and each time it tried to update to 1.9.1 and got the same message:

"err:clipping:CLIPPING_UpdateGCRegion hVisRgn is zero. Please report this"

Do I have to update? Is there anywhere I can download a slightly older client instead of a launcher? or even a new client, but not in launcher form? I think that if I did not haveto update, it would work. It updates automatically though :(

where did you guys download your DAoC from?

I thought of two other options, please tell me if you know they don't work before I try them next time:

I found the 14-day free trial on the camelot main page, perhaps I can download that, and use it to connect to Uthgard?

I have my old Camelot CD's from 2003. I also have the Shrouded Isles CDs , and all cd keys that come with them. Perhaps I can install these, download the catacombs graphics engine, and connect to Uthgard this way? The only problem is the age of the CDs. The CDs maybe a too old version, and I'll have to upgrade anyway.

Well, I'll try one of these tomorrow. And sorry for being such a noob, I have never used Wine or Cedega before, and have only played 2 video games, both of which were native for Linux. Thanks again for all your help. Goodnight for now.

by the way: I meant to say "I do not have windows PC" in the first post, edited it just now.

Is installing the 14 day trial supposed to look like I am installing shrouded isles?

one last try and if it fails, time to give up. Thanks for all the help so far. It's this update that is killing me.

If you have a catacombs CD it's better to start from it, it will save some GB of update.
For the linux matter, I'm not using it yet, but I will start in the end of november and I will surely try to run daoc from ubuntu, so I hope I could help you (or you help me :D) later.

Hi people ,

Uninstall properly all what you have installed about daoc from your computer . Darkness rising is free to download ( on official GoA site ) , you should be starting there by download it and then of course install . Once installed , for the 1st time you ll clic on the daoc icon , it ll update your launcher , restart the operation and ask to the update program to do a complete check up ... and then your game folder should be updated .

( if you realy want to play ) :
Dont forget to check the FaQ about linux , or go ask the question on live servers supported forums to gather more infos .

Regards

Khal

Thanks alot guys, it did not work, but probably only because of this update.

And Demiurgo, if you can, please post and tell me how you got yours to work, where you downloaded, what you used, etc. I will try again next weekend.

Bye for now

So what exactly does not work for you? When i installed Daoc i downloaded the installer from the goa page ( http://r.goa.com/r?ref=daoc_download_La ... C_LOTM.exe )
and then just used wine to install that file. I think the normal wine from winehq.org works better than cedega with daoc.

Thanks, I will be checking back every week, and here is what is not working:

When run from Cedega, all versions do the same thing - that is, they start to try to update to 1.9.1, but Cedega says "Wait a while and try connecting again", or "check internet settings" or "could not complete product update, try again later or check internet settings"

When run in Wine, every version tries to update to 1.9.1, but stops at 400 or so megabytes and returns: "err:clipping:CLIPPING_UpdateGCRegion hVisRgn is zero. Please report this"

bye for now

PS: using debian with custom kernel

Im starting using a bit linux, with wine and virtualbox and I have no problem. Still I didn't even try to run daoc from linux becase i have no free space atm :D

Anyway I found this:
Just tried Catacombs under Wine 0.9.2 - it runs!

The installer runs fine under wine, however the patcher fails. So use cedega to patch the game fully after installation. Use "wine login.dll" to skip the patcher and go directly to the login screen.

Windowed mode doesn't work (render creation failed problem), however you can enable a virtual desktop in wine so the fullscreen DAoC appears in a special wine window on the desktop."

Then the problem will be to use the DaocPortal, anyway there should be an easier way to direct connect to uthgard editing some file

I tried porting DAoC Portal to linux, but it's senseless, as most features required aren't even implemented in mono yet.

(Webbrowser, Ping/DNS Resolve, ..)
Be nice. :)

Maybe check out wxWidgets, Metty. I'm developing a C++-Applikation with wxWidgets libs. This runs under Windows, Linux, Mac, ... But that would require some bigger changes in existing code.

Anyways, good old dolloader.exe runs fine with wine and is all we need. :D
