Spellcrafting as a secondary skill

On my lowbie SB (an alchemist) I thought I'd raise spellcrafting as the secondary skill to pop a couple of envelopes points on my gear.
I can make the gems but I can't imbue anything with them.
Does anyone know if this is how it's meant to be or a bug?

ugh--annoying. I've never used secondaries to craft anything so I don't know. Sounds like a bug to me.
