It does the client check and then does nothing. If I click again it says I already have a client running.

The only solution I've found is to reboot the computer and redownload the starter every time. Does anyone else have this problem?

From the "Getting Started" page:
Try re-installing the Uthgard Launcher using a freshly downloaded setup first.

In order to be able to use the play button on the main page, you need to start uthgard.exe once manually to perform the necessary setup.

Some browsers will ask you if you want to launch an external application when clicking the button. For the launcher to work, you will have to select "yes" if asked.

By freshly downloaded setup, do you mean the launcher or the whole client?

I'm reinstalling the client now, and it is taking a long time.

I guess they mean the DAoC client. That's how I did it at least - and I never had any issues with the Play button not working.

Well it "works" but then says I have a client running when nothing is running on my computer.

I reloaded everything and it is working now. I hope I don't have to do this every day though.

I wouldn't think you have to. A fresh DAoC client install, run it once, install Uthgard stuff and it's dependencies and you should be good to go.

I just logged out, and then when I tried to log back in it said I had another client running.

Ok I rebooted the computer and it worked without doing anything else. Crossing my fingers that it works tomorrow.

How are you logging out? Do you click on a quit button (or /quit) or are you using some shortcut?

I thought maybe it has something to do with timing out due to inactivity instead of properly /quitting, but I had the same problem today when I started up the computer.

Here's what has been happening when I can't get in:

I start the computer and make sure it finishes checking for updates (steam, java, adobe, etc...) since those have interfered with logging in to MMOs in the past

I click on the Uthgard launcher on the desktop, and it opens the page that has the start button

I press the start button, and I get two consecutive popup windows that show it is checking for updates and checking the client

Once both popups close, my cursor does the blue spinning circle thing (Windows 10 is "thinking") twice. Then nothing happens.

If I click the start button again after this, it says I already have a client running and need to turn it off before starting again. However I can't find anything running on my computer that I can turn off, so I have to reboot the computer.

Here is what I did just now that did work:

After rebooting the computer, I went to the Uthgard website and redownloaded the launcher (I have like 10 copies in my download folder now) and ran it.

After the setup wizard, I told it NOT to start the launcher right away (I saw something about having to do it manually the "first time" though I'm not sure if that's what it was talking about)

I clicked on the launcher on the desktop to open the page with the start button and then clicked on the start button. Only one window popped up and showed a progress bar that filled up very quickly, and then sat there for about 10 seconds. Then it disappeared, I heard my hard drive spin, and the game window popped up.

I'd like to figure out what part of this process was what is actually causing it to work versus what doesn't work so I can just do that and not have to run through it all every time.
