Currently have a 26 Merc, and was also considering playing Arms when I picked my class.

Having second thoughts and wondering if I should have rolled an Armsman for RvR.

Looking for some feed back on what the two classes' roles end up being in an 8 man group.

Is one just as viable as another, and is one just as needed as another in 8 mans?

Thanks for any guidance.

I would say mercs are more needed than arms but arms are still a strong class for RVR.
They are both det tanks, you cant be wrong by playing one.
Basically stay merc.

About their roles, someone who played Alb longer than me should answer, its not like on Midgard where roles are clearly defined: the war will slam, the zerk will not (because he cant lol).

Better? I'd say it rly depends....

Arms
+ nice def RA for gro
+ plate
+ pole-styles/dmg (snare anytimer)
+ can be slambot in castergrp too
+ det (as mentioned)
- only range "rupt" is crossbow

Merc
+ Dw = good dmg AND good swingspeed
+ can wield shield n slam...
- ...but need swap in Inv
+ det (as mentioned)
- charge useless in old ra
- compared to arms just chain
+ 360° evade
+ dirty tricks

None is "better" - they differ in options and style
Having no other merc in grp cld be annoying vs. Bubble with pole
Swapping to shield cld be annoying
Having nothin but ur weapons (arms no diety tricks or sth) cld be annoying

So ur decision is just taste-based in my pt of view. U wanna be a dual wielding marauder or a crucial pole crushing knight ?

Armsman brings more utility to the group, especially vs the mid tank-heavy server we are up against right now, just with the RA of Soldiers Barricade. 2/3 arms in a group will be godlike.

Mercs are still fine, they might outdamage the armsman eventually (if they survive to do so), but the utility a merc brings to a 8v8 is near to zero.
Slam (w/o swapping sh1t in inventory), anytime snare, big damage burst, plate armor and Soldiers Barricade. All these, too strong.

PBT also too strong for armsmen :D
Play what you want they are both viable classes.
If you like playing offensive go for a merc, if you wana play defensive go for an armsmen imo.
Merc will always outdamge an Arms due to PBT and guard. If they dont they do sth wrong 8)

I imagine the Armsman is more forgiving too, correct me if I'm wrong.

Little simpler to play, not as much swapping, etc.

Mercs start becoming very good at high realm rank once they get prevent flight. Armsman are an excellent defensive class maybe the best in the game. You can't go wrong with either.

Armsman (as warrior) is really simple class. But if you get good at it (swap guards fast, intercept, swap weapons to guard someone inbetween your pole swings, or even swap waepons in between pbt - attack with 1h, break bubble, swap to pole BOOM, swap again 1h break next bubble, swap to pole again BOOM). If an armsman (and warrior, its pretty much same in theory) masters that quick thinking/swapping, then he will be MVP of the group.
