Minstrel question

Always like the minstrel class but never played one.

I noticed they have an Ablative Armor buff song. Can this be used when melee fighting solo or do you have to have an instrument equipped?

Can be used in melee, this is it's primary purpose however if you have a pet you will need to cycle the two 'songs'.
