So I have decided my Scout will not be the ranged sniper I had hoped from all I have read, and my minstrel will need a long, boring AT till lvl like 48 to be truly optimized..so...

Id prefer to not play a pure caster..though Id be willing to look into one, mostly what I am wondering is.

I would like a class in RvR that wrecks people like a train. I know typically that includes several different casters within each realm as they can drop mass dmg normally but are also typically glass cannons that are forced to try and stay out of the action or constantly on their toes to run or use some oh **** buttons.

I initially wanted to play a scout where I could creep and 2-3 shot casters and just pile dmg on to an unexpecting group fighting another group...shoot and move...but..after much reading I do not think it will work as I hoped.

So id either like to be a inf where I can pop stealth on a back line and shred the support/dmg casters to help the frontline or a merc where I can unload on them as well but just a bit more sturdy.

I have not played in over 10 years so I may be way off and how these classes function but I was guessing that the merc was basically a warrior type geared towards dmg as an armsman is a warrior type geared towards tanking. So I hoped the merc was heavy dmg and a fear in melee in RvR. The inf thing interests me quite a bit but I have heard you need to start a good PvE farm character first to gear the inf and that the inf cannot solo very well? Which makes sense though.

So...help a fella out here. Would you just lvl a solo PvE farm character first, like some sort of caster/friar type then bring up a merc or inf behind em when you can gear them?

I want to get into end game RvR soon as possible and do not want to level two characters and be that far behind everyone who just lvls a main and goes right to it.

You should have no problem going Merc first then doing Inf. Merc is a great offtank, and does some serious DPS, even with the reaver getting levi at 50.

If you want to have an easier time leveling, and getting into raids, I would spec for shield. Slash/thrust autotrains, so you'll want to spec crush as you level up. 50 DW, 42 shield, 51 composite weapon spec, rest parry is a nice spec imo.

Also, Mercs are hugely wanted in RvR. They get cheap purge, cheap IP, and determination.

You can play minstrel without AT... unless you are a hardcore player.

You can try a mercinfil ;).

Jokes aside, Merc would be easier and more group friendly. And you dont need to lvl a farm char 1º.

Anyway i'll suggest you to stick with minstrel.

As a general rule, i suggest first level up a group needed class, so you can level ASAP and farm the ****** out of the game so you can gear your main char.
As far as Scout goes, i would suggest it to try it tbh.
Don't get feared by these comments of "its a bad patch for archers" or "sins will tear you apart".
Yes Scout on 1.65 is not the fotm class to roll but its not a trash class either. Most of the times its all about position and actual know how of the class.
Sins will win 7/10 fights if they know what they are doing but its not like there will be 20 near you all the time, like many tend to say.
Picking up your spots carefully and generally avoiding CampMGs will get you some sweet RPs.
Trust me, its more frustrating to roll a Fotm class and
1) Get zerged out most of the times
2) Get into an incapable group and feed RPs
3) Stay in APK for a long time, trying to pick a random needed spot or wait for the X friend to log in

Than focus on a capable solo class that can have a stealth fun (Yes stealth zergs will be frustrating as well).

Just my 2 cents from a Scout RR 7 and Infil RR 8 before ToA.

Merc sounds right up my ally then, I think I will give em a try here on beta and see how I like the class. Hopefully scare a bug or two and speed this beta along as well :)

And yeah, I am not a hardcore player but the idea of getting to end game and then heavy RvR and realizing that I am just a bit behind the AT minstrels no matter what I do just because they unlocked several things I just cannot get...will no doubt irritate me.

So yeah...not big on being min/max or hardcore but just something that is going to linger in the back of my mind...but...I do want to enjoy the game and am very interested in a Minstrel.

I think I will make one also and start lvling him without AT...If I just love the class then screw AT because it is a game...it is for me to have fun and relax...so if I love the class I will not lvl him all those lvls not being able to play with his abilities just to min/max at end game.

If I enjoy the merc though as much...then I will lvl him first and bring an AT minstrel up slowly in the rear just for future RvR reasons.

Thank you guys...you have given me much to contemplate, I shall just toy around with a few classes and see what I enjoy..that is the first and most important part.

P.S. Just to add after I wrote the above...I will also consider the input about the scout as well...I think im realizing I have been faaaaaar too worried about what is best and not just what will I enjoy...think I will just roll several different classes and see what I enjoy playing the most and just stick with it. I am at a point in life where I can not devote but 25% of the time that hardcore players will so it is not like I am going to be some top tiered player anyways lol.

Thanks again!

you have 10 slots in your account, try 1st the class you love more (no matter what others say), if at any point you don't enjoy it any more stop playing it and make another one

1) You would only have to AT the minstrel up to 36.

2) 50 Instrument / 44 Thrust is purely a 8v8 spec. From an RvR perspective pretty much useless outside of it. That is the reason why most of the people who truly love playing the minstrel usually have two lvl 50 minstrels. One for 8v8 and another 50 inst/ 29 slash / 31 stealth (or a slight variation of it) for solo/stealthgroup fun, which for me is a lot more fun than regular 8v8.

3) Scout would be just as terrible of a first character as an infil would, if not even more terrible. I'd argue that even more terrible, because scout is a huge money sink if you want to level efficiently. And yes, Scout is still awesome even in 1.65, if you're good at using the left side of your brain.

If there is something Albion is lacking is a good merc train in the face of healers.
Go merc and go thrust.
