Understanding RvR?

So I use to play DAoC a LONG time ago...I do not remember a whole lot except I think it was my second mmorpg next to Everquest and the Realm vs Realm thing just captivated me.
I only remembering playing around in it a small amount though before other things stole me away from this fantastic game, Now I am a casual player who can dedicate a night or two for a little hard core sit in for hours and hours but mostly I will not be at it every night and day. I really want to be able to fit into groups when I want to but also be decent at solo...so this might be a really dumb post...like wouldn't everyone want the perfect group AND solo character.. I guess I'm just curious, if I role with an archer/rogue class am I able to solo and grab a spot in RvR groups? Yes I am aware that it may be hard to solo as an archer because I have read about this see hidden issue but I am hoping with a lot of skill and proper target selection I can drop people here and there? I am trying to have a mix of playing what I want to play but also not totally limit myself...I would prefer a more melee type class over a caster but I am open to suggestions. Realm does not really matter. I love the idea of either playing a rogue and just wrecking people who never saw it coming, or an archer that splits from a group and after they engage just landing some heavy blows that drop the already weakened enemies who also..never saw that coming. So maybe I am living in a funny type of place but I would like to think that even though it may "suck quite often" there can be good RvR done as an archer and even become someone to be feared? I live in the belief that a well played class can shine where it normally doesn't if you truly understand it inside and out. I have seen good players who played non-group friendly classes in other mmorpg's who were always taken just for their ability to play their class and play the game as a whole very well. So am I really just going to be sad if I roll any archer class because I will be constantly just dropped in RvR unless I'm in a large zerg? I mean it is hard to tell when people are just complaining because they expect easy mode in life or because it really, really is a major balance issue. I could just roll a rogue type but I get this odd feeling there are gonna be a lot of em. I played a Witch Hunter in Warhammer and I did like the spike damage, utility, face melting aspect of popping out of stealth and just shredding healers/casters...so...I am very open to a strong dps rogue class as well. Sorry for the long message...just did not want to be another "What should I be" post without enough background info. Thanks again and I cannot wait...it has been prolly 10 years atleast since I have rolled in DAoC. Crilasean

Archers are at a big disadvantage due to see hidden, as you mentioned. And yeah there will be a lot of assassins. As far as rvr groups, I wouldn't count on getting many invites unless there's 8 man stealth groups. I would suggest a minstrel maybe a skald for soloing/grouping class. They can both solo pretty well, having speed makes avoiding large groups much easier. Minsts get stealth as well if you spec high enough in it.

I played from launch until shortly after ToA and 8-mans were either DF gank groups or a thing some people did. The majority of RvR on our server involved entire guilds, even alliances. Maybe I don't understand the mentality since this maybe became more of a thing after mass exodus from live when populations shrunk drastically and I was long gone, or maybe it was just certain servers. Again, I'm not saying no one did it but on no planet was it the meta-game. Hopefully when the server goes live we will have such guilds as opposed to guilds that fancy themselves some kind of MOBA team. ... but yes, as it relates to your particular choice even in terms of guilds RvRing together stealthers usually rolled with other stealthers just because of the nature of that roll... but we would still have archers in our groups though when sieging or defending, though. |

Sounds to me like you'd favour the minstrel class. Very group friendly even when played half well. Absolutely amazing when played well. Also has the option to solo as a visible class or a stealther.
Another option would be a skald. Doesn't have the stealth ability of course but the class is a must have in every group. Easy to solo with too. If you do choose to play a minstrel, I would take the time to research your intended spec and the auto train that goes along side it BEFORE you start leveling and grinding. Can be a huge mistake to overlook it while leveling and could cost you in the long run. Nobody wants to hit 50 and realise they wasted a load of points that would have been perfect for their intended play style. As mentionned earlier, your best guess would be minstrel for a stealther/solo/group toon
Their has been some tries (some pretty effective) with stealthers in groups, especially with TOA (BG/sojourner abilities). On OF, it's a little harder as you get squishier than a real tank and do slower damages than a caster (from a certain perspective) It's true though that you still can be an optional 8th member if you find a real complacent group / guild that is willing to grab you ^^ for argumentation purpose let's say i'm going your way ![]() - rangers are a kind of gimp BM but their self add damage helps a little if their are no warden grouped, they still have the side stun and rear snare so can stay in assist on the back lines with the mages and peel when needed yet their lack of guard / anytime or rear style stun ability makes it pretty harsh imo : we tried it on another server and was a pretty nice add on damages and surprise effect with the long range of the bow - hunter have a real style stun and i think a side snare but it gets harder to peel that way. Another pet in group would mean playing it more interrupt strikes and assisting when needed i think. Difficulty is you either get buffs and a good pet or a decent rapid fire or a rear stun -> not sure about this choice, never tried it but i think it could also go full spear and pet, rest bow and still be able to fit in a train assist with the rear stun as the other light tanks of the realm share the same armor type it might be the better set up with a little bit of points in bow to help damages when rooted but people would still prefer a than i think (guard, slam, DD assist, chain armor, instants, intercept, more hit points) - scouts have a shield ... : pretty usefull for a slam on the back lines and guard ability on mages when the paladin/other tanks are on an assist train and can come back fast enough to protect a mage from an extending tank. Small shield though means only blocking 1 target and fear the dual wielders (especially the zerks), not a tank means no intercept so your guarding ability still is lower than a tank. Your only chance is that you could respec (at the cost of .... argl... ^^) 0 stealth/50 bows/42 shield / 39 weap for a group setup (no solo anymore on this one hey ![]() on all parts, you still get the ability to choose your damages depending on your target so the "not-10 but +10" bonuns damage increase is not to debunk BUT you need to be really really aware of all classes and their armor type and fast at switching bows with you mouse (rapid rupt+rapid shot if available, slow and damaging assist when needed) the assasin type (SB/NS/infi) are a little gimp type imho to get in a group even if i'd love to try it ![]() ![]() I remind you (and all others :p) again that it is IF (!) and only IF(!) you find some people agreeing to try this foolish experiment and IF (!) you are really showing off ![]() |

I never was much for 8 man groups myself, I usually solo or zerg surf. But unfortunately a large portion of these freeshards revolve around such play styles and all the experimentation has been done so they know the best comps for 8 mans, and they don't include stealthers. I have seen a few guilds saying they will be zerging all over so I look forward to that and really hope they are successful. Krycek - Infiltrator

Just wanted to say thank you all for your input..seems I have a lot to consider and I shall look at other options for my first toon. I think I will make a scout just to see if I cant still enjoy him to some extent but I def. think I will make him some alt and find something else for a main. I am also going to wait a minstrel until I have guilded and found people willing to help lvl him since I have heard of the agony of autotrain grind to 48 or whatever.
Thanks again and safe hunting. Crilasean
