Update: Please vote for Win XP support there: https://uthgard.org/tracker/issue/89/

----

As far as I understand it, the new Uthgard launcher doesn’t run on Microsoft Windows XP "only" because Microsoft .NET 4.6 is required (which doesn’t seem to be available for Win XP).

From the FAQ:

https://uthgard.org/howto#wiz-h-3 wrote:Can I use the Uthgard Launcher with Windows XP?

No. Windows XP has been deprecated, and should no longer be used since it represents a security risk. Please update your OS if you want to play on Uthgard. You need to be able to run Microsoft .NET 4.6, and your operating system must support TLS 1.2.

According to the Steam Software Survey, only about 2% of remaining gamers use Windows XP, which is a marginal group we can no longer support.

While I don’t agree that the Steam statistic is relevant for a classic DAoC server (which attracts many people that haven’t played anything serious for years, and that still have their old Windows XP PCs not used for anything else, like me and several friends I convinced to start on Uthgard 2.0), let’s assume here that the staff won’t change the launcher to make it compatible to Win XP.

Is there any trick or workaround or something like that to get .NET 4.6 running on Windows XP? Or to get the launcher running without .NET 4.6? Maybe something similar to Wine but on Windows itself?

Virtualization is no option, because the hardware is too weak for that.

(If not, I’ll try to get it running with Wine on my main PC that runs GNU/Linux, but its hardware is even weaker than my old Win XP PC and it has only onboard graphics, so not sure if that will work. But let’s keep this topic about Windows XP, for all others that have this problem.)

I don't think so...
Note that you'd also be required to get TLS 1.2 working on XP, which is a different beast.
Be nice. :)

Would this necessarily have to be supported on the PC you play with, or could a different machine with a secure/up-to-date OS be used (e.g., if it’s only for generating the login code)?

It has to be the machine you're playing on, as it's used by the patcher, and for the launcher for integrity checks

FYI, I recommend you adding a feature/bug report for WinXP in the issue tracker. If it gets enough upvotes (and players deem it as a high priority), we can reprioritize this issue.
Be nice. :)

It would be a lot more preferable to use linux + wine or something than Win XP for old computers.

I've tried a bit with winXP stuff, and you will have issues that I have doubts we can resolve without changing a lot.

What about manually patching the installation, and then connecting to the server without having to use the launcher - is this possible at all?

Kind of like how in the past, people would create batch files using connect.exe to avoid having to use DAoC Portal.

Then we would also open the game to client modders and hackers. Windows XP was buried more than 2 years ago. I liked that OS very much, but we do not have the capacities to for supporting it. Too much effort and too high security risk (new versions usually come for a reason) for too few users.

What about the .NET Framework 4.6 requirement? Is it still related to the TLS version?

Beacause, sometimes you can't update it easly.. you know... at work place :D
There was a time when Uthgard 1.0 existed and maaaany toons and arrpees arose... but now:

Just because the launcher isn't compatible with a system that can run the game just fine? I don't know how many people are that desperate to play this beta, but that's way past ridiculous, having to install a whole other OS just to run a launcher.

No but if your running more recent components.. Windows 7 would utilize them in a far better way than xp will. Also you'll start having issues even going to websites soon enough... Bit the bullet and upgrade your OS.. You can do a side by side so you can move data over without losing anything.
