If I play a minstrel does that mean I only put 44 points into thrust and then after I reach level 40 I can put points into instruments?

auto train give automatically 1 level to important lines(instrus for minstrel) every 4 lvls, starting from lvl 8 until lvl 48, this means that if you don't train any lvl in this/those line/s you will end at lvl 48 with 12 on them. the automatic train will end in the moment you train once on this/those line/s.

The bad side is that, if you want those extra points you have to gimp yourself to get them, when the intended use was the opposite

If you wait until level 40 to put points into Instruments, you will get 54 bonus points, which will let you get the wonderful 44 Thrust, 50 Instruments build. You could wait until level 48 to put points into instruments, to maximize the points you get from Autotrain (potentially 77), but that will only give you a few more levels of Stealth. Not worth it, in my opinion. If you google "Uthgard Charbuilder", the first result will give you a better idea of what is available to you, through Autotraining.

And don't worry about having a difficult time leveling up. there will be so many players around, it should be easy to find a group, even if you can only do weak damage. Good luck!
