Come on Baman, lets be honest with ourselves, whether I log onto my RR3 or my RR8, or my lvl 45 Animist in CM gear, you still run away like you came face to face with a zerg of zombies in a Walking Dead episode.

Looks like I won 50 bucks.

This server has been down so long I forgot who I liked and disliked. It will be like a complete clean slate for daoc.

So how about getting this thing back up?

Players can greatly contribute to a server if you let them.

Uthgard, still the best server. Thanks, Devs.

This server has been down so long that before long the software will no longer work on existing operating systems because we will all be using a 128bit OS and most of us will be trying to play it in retirement homes. 8O

The one big and obvious question that I have is why couldn't the old server that ran fine just been kept up since we've waited almost 1 entire year now? I'm pretty sure it was taken offline in Jan/Feb right? It's almost like these guys don't want any of us to play on their server once it is actually up since only the truly hardcore will keep checking back every month or 2 just to see that once again nothing has happened at all and no updates either.

I played here when the server was new and there were usually like 5 people online and I hope it isn't like that next time because it wasn't fun the first time and it was 2+ years until there were enough players to do much of anything, even pve grouping.

Anyway, sorry for the rant and it was fun while it lasted and maybe we can all kill each other again one of these days.

Damn dude, ****** some more why don't you. You realize its posts like yours and others that might be discouraging the devs to work faster or to even work on the server at all. Lets face it, why should they when the player base they have to look forward to includes demanding whiny little ****** like you? Do us all a favor and GTFO.

Discouraging the devs? what in gods name are you talking about? They don't need encouragement, they need to get off their high horse and tell us what is going on. The current behavior is just disrespectful to the playerbase and severely lacks communication. Let me explain why:

Almost a year ago (January/February 2014) a server called Origins was started. Despite all the bugs it was very succesfull in the beginning because it provided what many DAoC fans hoped for for years: A new server (and new is very important) with old realm abilities and old frontiers. Yea, Uthgard been around, but it didn't have old RAs and RR12+ groups dominated in RvR. The reason why Origins started off so well was the fresh start: A server with old RAs where everyone starts from scratch attracts a LOT of players, the "new server, everyone has to start from level 1" feeling is very, very powerful and a lot of people enjoy playing on a server like this in the first weeks and months. Also, of course, the name Origins attracted people too (Mythic's Origins reference)

Then Uthgard's playerbase started to diminish, everyone was playing on Origins. The GMs and Devs here realized that Uthgard was basically dead if they didn't act. Now the really really big advantage Uthgard had was their Code. It was cleaned up, stable and the server was basically lag free even with over a thousand people online. This was something that Origins could never do, they tried, but their code was just too flawed. Of course people didn't realize that so quickly and still played there, hoping they could fix their lag.

Uthgard realized that they had a once in a lifetime chance of re-establishing their playerbase and maybe even expand it and announced the revamp: Imagine all the players Origins dragged into the freeshard scene, all the frustrated people, who couldn't stand the lag on Origins anymore, imagine if they suddenly had a server with less bugs and a stable code, a server with a very similar ruleset to Origins (Old RAs, old Frontiers, SI, a fresh start) but no lag? 90% of Origins playerbase would have played on Uthgard, easily.

Now the GMs and Devs here on Uthgard realized that and saw the chance.

Here comes the problem, though: The Devs here are way too perfectionist and simply slow. And the communication with their community is horrible. When asking a staff member in IRC one week after the revamp has been announced about how long it would take he told me "2-3 Months, not a year". Also all the news posts indicated that it would be ready before the summer at least. And it could have been, had they not been so god damn stubborn (as they always are).

All they had to do was wipe the character database (which doesn't take long), introduce the old realm ability system (which wouldn't have taken long given the fact they had all the working codes for them from Xali from the Yggdrasil freeshard - they just would have had to implement those), tweak the experience system and boni a bit (which can take some time with testing, but not more than a few weeks), remove the non-classic items from the database (again, doesn't take that long) and have a look at SI (which can take a few months, depending on how thorough you are, but even this can be done in 2-3 months).

But, of course, if you want to implement a useless system like armorpenetration (which, let's be honest, to the casual player doesn't make any diference at all and is just a gigantic waste of time and manpower), if you want to get every SI quest's subtext right and 100% livelike and every location, shape, size, name and model of every single SI mob, NPC, if you want to have the 100% livelike values of the old realm abilities as it was back in 2002 and 2003 and therefore have to rely on 320p videos and heresay as your source, yea, then of course it's gonna take long to get it ready. then it's going to take years and not months.

And that is exactly what we're experiencing right now, and the problem is that the devs don't tell us this but keep us here by telling the playerbase lies about that it's ready at some time. The truth, though, is, that it's never going to be, because they're like a horse chasing a carrot that's being held in front of their nose by the guy who sits on it's back. It's impossible to reach. Their goals are not realistic and won't be achieved.

My problem is that the things they want to implement do NOT MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE AT ALL to the playerbase. These are things that maybe make up 2-3% out of 97-98% of the whole server experience, but are really really hard to implement. It's basically not needed, the server would be amazing also without these things. But no, of course they have to chase them, and that's why this server is never going to be online again.

yea it is. but by then everyone else will have moved on and not care anymore about it. because with their attitude and work ethic it's going to take easily 4-5 years to release a "perfect" product. but then no one will give a ****** anymore about it. and that's the problem :)

I understand that the devs want us to believe they are busy, and that the summer takes time away due to nicer weather, but it's been months now without another updated response.

My visits to check back here become less and less frequent (not that I expect anyone here to care), but the point is that if one person is like this many others are too.

I wasn't really known among people on the forums, and I did keep to myself in game, but thats because DAoC always meant something a little different to me, and Uthgard was the perfect place for me to reminisce in those memories that I have always been so fond of. So, I played here, I grouped with some of you and enjoyed small conversations and laughs and I enjoyed it immensely.

But this silence is borderline ridiculous. Leaving a fan base in the dark in asinine. It's like punishing the good child in the family for being the good and loyal child. And there's really no reason for it except pure apathy towards the project and the people who came to enjoy it and count on it.

I imagine that many of the devs don't actually come back to these forums anymore, even to their little dev only areas, and I imagine many of the people who once worked on Uthgard don't communicate anymore, because really, any group of people who communicated with each other and were making progress would want to share that with others.

It's like everyone here is waiting outside the doors, camped for almost a year now, waiting for the next great smart phone, only they don't realize that the blacked out windows at the front of the store are only concealing an empty store where no employees work, no decorating or preparation for that big release is happening, but the people sit and wait and camp because they so dearly believe in that product and that faith can't be wasted - can it?

@Kenderkenobi - Not sure if you saw this the other day...after writing a few posts similar to yours today, I was glad and appreciative to have a GM confirm they have in fact not given up and we can continue to hold out hope for Uth 2.0. ;)

Anyways, make of it what you will.

You know all these people doom saying and acting like they are owed something makes me ill. The Devs have taken their own time to get this server working as best it can. When the old server was up people would complain about all the stuff that didn't work. Then when the Devs take it down for a reboot people complain about that. If I was working on the server and reading all the whiny posts people are making I am not sure I would want to continue. Why should they, they aren't being paid. At the very least I would remember all the people that complained and ban their IPs. Clearly those people don't deserve to play on a FREE SERVER. So its taken awhile for the devs to update people..... could it be because they specifically said they will ONLY IF THERE IS ACTUAL NEWS? I don't need a play by play of what they are doing. It takes maybe 5 minutes a week to come here and fine out whats going on. If you think it is a waste of your time to come to the forums for a couple minutes a week THEN STOP COMING. I for one will welcome the lack of constant and idiotic posts you complainers create. I would much rather just see actually updates or happy posts about what people plan to do when the server comes back up.
