The group that runs up against them can't kill them fast enough because smite clerics have sooooooo many tools at their disposal combined with decent ranged damage with 8 of them dudes doing it!

Obviously someone stole Baman's forum login as the real Baman would never promise this.

Can I throw in a suggestion for Uthgard? With making this Classic/SI server, you are definitely going to have a lot of players.
Maybe even enough for the need of much better server - in that case, I would suggest a monthly payment system. I think peepz would agree to make a payment like 10-12 € per month to support this server. Most of the players are old farts already anyway, that have a job (selling candy to little boys perhaps) and are willing to spend it to keep this server running topnotch!

I would even be willing to start making the payments (not via donation, that system I do not support, sry) NOW, if ya guys could give me an estimated time of the server to be back up.

But ok - keep it up coders - always tell these fans what You need for us to be of any assistants to help things along. And keep us in the loop!

Doesn't work like this, sorry Bro. ;)

Donations are always welcome though! However, Blue hasn't accepted my last few donations yet....anyone heard from him recently?! Would definitely love an update from the GM's, and maybe from the GrandMaster, Blue, himself!

Hope everyone enjoyed their summer (cept for our Australian peeps, hope winter was good;) and hopefully we can reunite soon on Uth 2.0!

Guess what happens if they take monthly fees for this freeshard, and EA/Mythic/bla gets knowledge of that.

Well, think of a system to get around it. Monthly donations? :D Don't care. At least I know that peepz would not have anything against paying monthly for the upkeep of this server...

A possible way to raise money while potentially avoiding liability is to register as a 501(c)(3) non-profit. Whereby monthly "suggested donations" could be collected - to cover costs (for servers, programming, etc...). However, the "donation" must not be mandatory. The paperwork for setting up a 501(c)(3) and assuring sufficient bookeeping for tax purposes is a bit tough, but those costs can be passed through the suggested donation amount.

The benefit of having a non-profit is to potentially avoid copyright infringement liability. The "fair use" doctrine allows those who are pursuing criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship and research to use and reproduce copyrighted works without getting permission from the copyright owner. Even though Uthgaard does not fit nicely into one of those categories, the Supreme Court has held that as long as there is no commercial use (i.e. profit) made of the copyrighted work, there is no infringement. That said, there are a number of other factors the courts have weighed aside from the commercial use, but its likely there would be no infringement.

An intriguing idea, but the simpler idea here IMO is to just continue as a free shard as there seems to precedent for allowing entities such as Uthgard to exist as long as they are donation based only.

Also, and I am not 100% sure on this, but I believe 501c3 applies only to the US jurisdiction, so things could easily be pursued legally in Europe if Uth became p2p.

Lastly, I am uncertain you can found a 501c3 without US citizenship, and with Blue and the majority of other GM's hailing from Europe this would be an issue. Maybe Abydos would be up for the fun and responsibility. ;)

When we edit the client files (OF zones / craftfix / etc) we are already breaking the copyright.. but *player side*, if you they put a payment system and break it even server side, mythic could find the want/resources to try close uthgard with only one action (that is a more effective way than monitorate every client changes).

Also who told you that people would pay 10-12$ every month? I don't think so lol :gaga:

Anyway, everytime i check uthgard forum, it remember me of that video: http://coub.com/view/34x1l

:o
There was a time when Uthgard 1.0 existed and maaaany toons and arrpees arose... but now:
