To me there's always some point where I simply can't stand to look at very dated game graphics anymore. While the gameplay of Daoc ist still pretty much unmatched, its engine falls more and more behind. I remember when I started to play game like Lord of the Rings Online for example and was amazed by the graphical detail. Today that same game - even though its graphics are WAY better than Daoc's - looks pretty old. I kinda doubt I'll start all over if it takes many months (or even years) till Uthgard's relaunch, because once the graphics look too bad to give me the "It's visually pleasurable to play a char in this world"-feeling, it's pretty much over for me :(

Yah, I'd agree with Cad here. Graphics mean little to me these days, especially since so few AAA games that look amazing have even semi-decent story and gameplay content. My favorite games of the past 5 years have ranged from dated (think Fallout 3 or Oblivion style), to retro 8-Bit (Lone Survivor), to straight up antiquated (i.e. DAOC/Uth).

Much like Cad's analogy of movies, Avatar was a visual spectacle when released, but with one of the worst, unimaginative and poorly enacted story lines (as well as stolen btw) I had watched in a long time. I would any day watch a movie such as Children of Men (though granted also with beautiful cinematography) with an actual story line, then a cold, unemotional visual masterpiece. There are exceptions obviously too, as movies such as Dark Knight, Sunshine, Inception, The Matrix, etc can definitely supply both. Unfortunately, they are few and far between though.

So my take on it: beautiful is fun for about 10 minutes, and then I grow bored w/o content. Outside of the Metro series and Bioshock Infinite, no AAA video game title that has been released in the past 5 or more years that I have been mildly interested in.

Case and Point: You can't beat the best, regardless of when it was released or what it looks like. Hence my love and adoration for DAOC, and what Uth has represented for the past ten years.

Just My Two Cents,

Alpha

I fully agree. There are way too many games which are great on graphics, but when it comes to gameplay they fall behind even most C64-Games (yes, I am THAT old  ). I wouldnt have started on Uth in the first place if the gameplay wasn't awesome. But even though gameplay is by far the most important factor, graphics have to be at least bearable compared to the state of the art. To me Daoc is borderline in this regard.

DAoC looks still "good" if you manually activate Antialiasing and Anisotropic Filtering for camelot.exe ..

So what? Still better than Comic-Style WoW graphics.. :!:

Open the server as "open beta" maybe. Players will be more acceptable that things are uncompleted, still a bit buggy and that progress will be reset.

That's the reason they wanted to close it in the first place...
[3:10pm] <myrmidon^> You have to be a c*** to be awesome at daoc

The group that runs up against them can't kill them fast enough because smite clerics have sooooooo many tools at their disposal combined with decent ranged damage with 8 of them dudes doing it!

ho uthgard its still not open....

Well I think this server will never come back. Really sad, but true.

July and august incoming = holidays = no time = no work on Uthgard, so we're already in september, and I don't think they want to reopen it.

Maybe they don't want to open the server with 100-200 online players? Population drops in summer for every freeshard. They are not going to reopen before September imo.

People need to chill the hell out and stop assuming that Uthgard is done. I for one have no problem taking 5 minutes once a week to check the site for news. Just shut up and let them get the job done, or would you rather they rushed through it because of you idiots and it reopens with tons of issues. Do it right, or don't do it is my feeling and anyone who isn't actively helping them get it done in some way can just shut the hell up.
