forgive me if i didnt read all of the 37 pages and i probably just repeat things already written before...

i really dont think that wiping everything including all chars is a good idea

i remember when you deleted an item in Albion wich almost everyone used in their Template ( just as the Tajendi Cloak) and the wining was big, but Albion survived !
Nayru wrote:Maybe the current problems would have been solved if we "only" would have killed the items

well go ahead and do that! for sure most ppl can deal with that even taking away the Platins and RR
but deleting all the chars imo is not fair.

the old chars here were the ones who had a HARD TIME to level and even harder time to get equipped and still played on Uthgard even if there were less then 30 players online on primetime.
These ppl who stayed with you helped Uthgard grow or am i wrong ?
many of these people are still here...

after Uthgard goes online again, how long will it take until ppl have much more gold or better Items or much higher RR then others
simply because some Farm 24/7, or craft all day long or just RvR or just have played for a longer time ?
yes this comes from someone who will loose a lot but i dont care if you delete what i have

dunno if that is only me, but after almost 9 Years you get somewhat emotionally addicted to your char and just thinking about it beeing deleted makes me really sad :(
i just wish you will find a better solution then a complete wipe

Hello,

@Nayru and all other GMs:

I can fully understand what you say about the need of a wipe. And well, nobody of us all (not me, not any other player and not a Gm) is god... nobody of us can be absolutly sure about what decisions will work and what decisions wont work. It is possible, that a wipe is the best what can be done. But i think it is not. I allready wrote some thoughts about "why is a wipe not a good idea" at other places in this forum, but now, let me extend this a bit.

First of all, i think it is fully clear (even for you GMs), that a wipe will bring a loss of trust into the safety of what a player achieved here over time. If it happens one time, that your achievements get wiped, people will get aware, that it can happen anytime... no matter what the GMs say. Well, of course there is never any 100% safety in life... but most people dont think about that fact as long as they are not personally involved into a "bad happening".

So fact: People will loose trust into the safety of their achievements. That is bad. I think you as GMs dont wont the people to loose trust in you. Correct me, if i am wrong :) But i dont think that i am wrong, because you say, that a wipe is a really hard decision from your point of view... so i am sure you dont wanna hurt people, you dont wanna loose their trust.

But what are the reasons for a wipe? You say, there have been many bugs in the past, which have been missused. You say, that new players have it harder to achieve some things in comparison to players, who where allready playing, before some fixes and changes went in. Yep, you are right. This is all true.

So you say: Lets equal the chances for all, give a fresh start to everybody, so nobody has an advantage in comparison to others.

And up on that you say: people will be demotivated starting on a server, where other players are far far away with lvl, RR, Money, equip, and so on.

And you say: as a result of past times with unbalanced content, we have too much money in the game and we have items we dont to be anymore in the game.

(again, correct me if i am wrong)

Well ok, all of this are valid arguments, but:

There are never (let me repeat this: never!) really equal chances... not in real life, not in any game, not anywhere else. As example: I play here since around 3 years. i have very little time to play, not much more then around 2 or 3 hours per week. in this 3 years, i build up some chars, but not one of that chars is higher then lvl 48, not one of that chars has more then rr3l2. not one of that chars has a special item... all normal dropped items and crafted. i never made a dragonraid or df raid or something Special. well, what i have, is all 6 craftprofessions legendary and around 57 plat money... and a small cottage. That is all, what i achieved in 3 years. This is, in comparison to many other players (who have much more time) really laughable... it is very very small, what i achieved. Why? Because the chances are not equal... they have much more time, then i have. Well, does a wipe gonna help me? No. Even if start together with all others again from scratch, i will never achieve, what other players with more time will achieve. Does it really hurt me, that other players achieved more, then i can ever achieve? No! Because i am very proud of every achievement, i reached. The wipe will hurt me, because i loose everything i achieved with my small small amount of time for daoc... but this wipe wont (!) give me better chances.

And up on that: Do you really think, that it was in every single way easier for the players in the past? I think not. In the past, there where times with much less server population in comparison to the last 1 or 2 years. In the past, there where much more bugs and incomplete content in the game. Well yes, bugs which got abused... but also many bugs which just where anoying. It is totally wrong to say: New players need equal chances, because a new player has a so much harder life on Uthgard then a player who started x years ago. The challenges for the players changed over the years... but the past had also his challenges, players had to deal with. AND... not every player missused existing bugs... only some of them did.

Does it demotivate people to start on a server with people far away in lvl, rr, money and items? Well yes, that is true. But that affects first of all gamehopping or at least serverhopping players, who are not fully dedicated to Daoc/Uthgard. Really dedicated players see more in a game or server then just the distance in money, rr and so on, other players allready reached.

Can a wipe help in this point? Yes. But you know what? It just helps to motivate the not fully dedicated gamehopping players. So for every not fully dedicated gamehopping player you motivate to start here because of the wipe, you loose a fully daoc dedicated player, who is demotivated because the wipe took him so much and because the trust into the safety of the future is gone.

About too much money in the game and problematic items: Is a whipe the only existing solution? No. Well for sure, it is in terms of this special problem the easiest solution, yes. If everybody looses everything, it is more or less fair. But item degradation works also for the no longer wanted items... and money can be taken away out of the game with other ways, that dont impact gamebalance. Give extremly expensive, nontradeable very special customs skins for armor or give really expensive glowing effects for weapons into the game. So many people would cut a leg of for great looking chars.. i am sure those skins or glowing effects could take much much money out of the game... and they dont impact gamebalance at all.

Last thought: With a wipe, you kick every player, who allready played here on uth, more or less into his butt. Well sure, some players say: Great, now i have better chances, because with fresh start for all, everybody is equal to me. But that is really an error in reasoning. The chances will stay the same... and one year after wipe, there will be again some players who have achieved much much more then others... just because they have more time to play. I think, with this wipe the whole server pays a really big price for an illusion.

Maybe i am wrong with everything i wrote... but i doubt.

Greetings

So what, a total re-roll is necessary to balance the server? Why not, rather than attempt to elude the issue, attempt to fix it? This decision is brash, and hastily thought out. I was among the poor in the Uthgard population. But is that such a bad thing? Where would the economy be in Uthgard without someone being the lowest level? I loved grinding for my gear. It was my favorite part about making my first toon. I don't want a total recall. I enjoyed my time in the lower class. It made me want to play knowing that I was working for my gear.

I feel this video sums up the problem very clearly. I'm not sure if many people follow 'Extra Credits', but they are some game developers that discuss game design. Uthgard, like DaoC and every MMO before and after it just had some powercreep.

Give this youtube a watch! Its only 7min 40 seconds, and its really good.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bxszx60ZwGw

Taj, and the events items added in some powerful items that crept up the game. The removal of the availability, or preventing their re-appearance keeps an 'elite' group that will have grandfathered powerful items. I would have argued that allowing the rest of the community to creep up to the same cap would have been equal to a wipe, but that's neither here or there.

There was likely not an easy fix to the economy. I was relatively late joiner, and even I got on some sweet drop rates to get myself a house. My friend tried to join, and would have had to work twice as long to get a house.

In the future I hope that uthgard is NOT afraid to add new content, and not afraid to be a little different from a patch mark if its for the best! (Guys really? Removing barrels? Haha, pet peeve.)

Stick to adding new incomparable! Everyone has to admit, the reason daoc seems to good is because its so so hard to tell what is better. A caster, stealther, tank or any combo can be great in a certain situation, and all the realm abilities just add to more combos the work in all sorts of ways. Put 20 people versus 20 people, with that many choices and the results will be variable enough keep people argueing about balance for years! (This is ideal! if it's not crazy obvious).

I enjoyed the time I spent here, and the people I played with. Thank you devs! Without your hard work it would not have been possible, you really have made something unique and special. Best of luck in round 2, see you there.

Am I a bit masochistic predisposed because I read the whole whining here every day again?

Not to sum up - that you repeat and repeat and repeat your self like the 10th time now.

Get over it - and now go for the hate you show up for all ppl which think wipe everything is a good thing.

However nobody wants an empty server. Newcomers must be included into the community and they must have the feeling to stand a chance. For DAoC to work, a crowded server is important. We will focus on missing features to be in good shape for a big comeback. After this we will see which alliances, guilds or players will spread the most fear among their enemies!

Obviously, this is a done deal now, but I feel compelled to highlight this section...

...which were largely ignored. You guys have been warned and warned again that you need to reduce time sinks in RvR. Most people will be fine with dying to a superior enemy (be it by skill, realm rank, or both), but you absolutely need to encourage these players to try again and to do everything you can to get as many people as possible into RvR so that there is a more even playing field. Again, any such suggestion was instantly dismissed as 'not in line with our vision for the server'.

...such as? I mean, honestly, nothing that was done with the server over the past...2 years (?) has been to benefit RvR. Absolutely nothing. You just made it harder for people.

Nayru wrote:For DAoC to work, a crowded server is important.

...and undoing everything that the community has put into this server over 11 years is the way to go? ^^

Don't get me wrong, change was needed - but I think a moderate approach that re-focused and sorting out the RvR system and lowering the entry barrier for people to participate would have been the way to go. And I get why it seems attractive to do a wipe and offer everyone a clean slate - but this is not why Origins has had such a phenomenal success (not alone, anyway). The Origins crew has made a great effort at communication with their players and they saw an opportunity to provide a fully featured OF server. This would never have happened if Uthgard had kept word instead of leading people by the nose for 4 years, throwing in the occasional nerf to convenient features along the way.

Uthgard's current state is not a consequence of money or RR, but of poor management over the past years. And that is something that needs to drastically improve, along with finally getting the server goal sorted out and implemented.

Yes we are aware of that risk, and yet still think it is what we need to do.
We have been around for 9 years with no wipe, do you really think we are doing this with a light heart and without considering the huge risk we are taking?

We hope players can see this is a one time deal. If not, we will rebuild that trust over the next 10 years hopefully.

This. Also my biggest thing is not my Inf, my money, or my real rank.

Its crafting. I started Sanguine over on Origins and we used to have every single craft LGM for all to use. With IP addresses being tied to accounts I can no longer just /send someone the login for the sanguinsc account and tell them to download Loki 1.4.

Now me/officers have to re-level a LGMSC............gag. Then how do we allow people to login and SC their own gear?

Its a massive headache.
There will be a group of people out there who will want this realm to be entirely Mythic-like. Exactly like vanilla, drop rates/xp rates, basically everything and you will not be able to please them unless it is exactly like vanilla.

These people have their nostalgia goggles on so tight it's cutting off the bloodflow to their brain and they believe that vanilla was perfect and nothing was wrong with it.
