Hi Uthgard Staff,

First of all, I want to thank you for the last 8 yeas I played DAOC on Uthgard. I had much fun and good times. All I want to ask you is to consider, that you surely don't want just Harz 4 players or kids here, spending 8 - 16 hours a day playing DAOC but also people like me, who have to work 8-10 hours a day and just have a few hours a week to play. I meet many players that are 30+ years old and don't have too much time to invest to grow many toons, crafters etc. again. I have no toon higher than RR 5.5 so I'm not one of the wealthy high rr players.

In the time when you close the server, people will move to Origins. They already offer what you want to offer when you relaunch your server. So what will be your unique selling point? Think about this. Why should people come back, when they started to level their chars and crafters on Origins server? I see no reason for that. And new players will join the server with the highest population if everything else is the same.

So I see a big risk that this server wipe is the end of Uthgard. I wish you all the best, thanks for the great fun in the last years, the support and your great effort. And thanks to all players and guild mates who made this game fun and a great experience.

Best regards,

Beholder 72

I haven't played much in recent months and I haven't tried Origins, but I'm quite shocked to see this announcement. Uthgard's greatest quality which seperated it from other shards throughout the past years was reliability and stability. While a lot of people including myself were frustrated with a lot of the changes that were introduced, the one thing I thought I could always count on was that if I felt like logging in again, all my characters at the least would still be there. If this is no longer the case, why would I want to stay loyal to Uthgard?

To me this seems like a panic and overhasted move. Just because another server is popular for a while you guys decided to wipe everything? That's what I'd expect from every other freeshard, but not Uthgard...

If this is really happening: Thank you to staff and players alike for the fun I got to have here over the years. So long, and thanks for all the fish.

This is the first wise decision within years and the first true words as well. Actually I only can wish you luck and a lot of energy, for you will need it!

One single thing I would like you to really keep in mind:

You write that "For DAoC to work, a crowded server is important." That my dear GMs is the key to success of Uthgard 2.0, should there ever be such a thing, which I defenitely hope for! In my opinion this can be achieved with two little things:

- group bonus similar to Origins (maybe not 5%, in my opinion 3.5% would be perfect) so there will always be a bunch of people doing PvM

- implement all the old BGs PLUS /rp off so there will always be a bunch of people around in the BGs

Remember: A player that is not around because PvM sucks and there is no way for 30 minutes of quick fun to relax (i.e., BGs with /rp off) cannot relog to another char for big boy RvR!

And keep in mind that you cannot force players to play the playstyle that you like because if you do they simply go away. I really do hope you have learned that lesson now.

this is a biggest nerf and a suicide also.
From my hopinion coming back in the future but with a reset would mean getting back a lot of population but it would last just for a short period. I played on many other shards in other games and I already saw this move when a server got a low population.. The conclusion of this move? 0 player in short time. Consider that many players now are older than when they start 9 years ago. they got a work, a family, no time for exping chars again.

But basically it has 0 players now aswell, so it really makes no difference. Why wouldnt you close it and revamp some stuff?

On a side note. I find it ironic that some of the biggest QQ'rs here, refuse to reroll, while they have bin telling everyone how easy it is to level up and gain realm ranks. And that the newcommers should stop QQ'ing and suck it up. Yet when asked of them todo the same, they rather quit. That's if a "full whipe" happends at all.

- Will Uthgard be a testserver to help the staff finding bugs and so on?

Yes
- Will this forum remain opened?

Yes
- Will you share progress steps and make polls for some decissions by players ? (for example Barrels, hasteners and so on, xp while dead and so on?)

We will keep a close eye on the forums and from the feedback we get when testing. However we wont make any promises as we honestly don't know yet.
- What is the final goal of new Uthgard, will you try to let some custom content in, like houses and so on ? (see question above)

To be as complete as possible, I think most of you know what this includes of features by now. Unfortunately many decisions has not been made yet, so it is not easy to answer these questions as we don't want to say we do something and end up not doing it.
Got any questions? Submit them to me and I will try to get them answered in our grab bag !

When l heard that, l really tought it was a joke.
I'm still playing uthgard but only in RvR, and for sure l won't re-xp lvl 50 any chars here and for sur if you delete all our chars when you want. It's just part of game life which is erase.
If you do this, it's really the end for sure. But you did a lot of modifications as barels, deter, long time to wait TP, so l really think you will do this, it's on the same line.

If GMs read one post from here it should be the full post from otinanai, snipping a section here:

otinanai wrote:1) Even at very high server pops (1k+ people) Emain used to be empty or almost empty. Why did that happen? Why didn't that happen to any other server I played?

There are multiple reasons:
a) Low RR players preferred farming keep tasks/guard tasks (PvE) for rps instead of PvPing. Why? Because they tried PvP, they 8v8ed against the high RR groups and naturally got their asses handed to them. But why don't they zerg them down? Because zerging is seen as lame/noobish by the community and the devs gave them the option to gain RPS by PvEing (guard tasks / undefended keep takes). So they prefer to hide from real PvP by farming guard tasks until they are high enough RR to take on the RR10+ groups. This could take months of course and very few survive the boring grind.

2) The food chain

RvRing in emain when there is 3-4 groups out isn't fun. It is easy for the weak groups to punish the good groups by logging off. Good DAoC RvR should have 200+ people in emain: Zergs, 8v8, small groups, stealthzergs, solos, solo stealthers etc.

It is the food chain: Zergs eat 8mans (if they can catch them, zergs are usually slow), 8mans eat small groups, small groups/stealthzergs eat soloers/solo stealthers. Every one of those groups is important. If one goes away the chain breaks and RvR dies.

Uthgard's food chain was broken. There were almost no zergs, because it was frowned upon and also because low RR players had other options to get rps (guard tasks = PvE = get rps without the shame). Also there were almost no soloers/solo stealthers because of the removal of buffbots. So you had very limited options: 8v8, small group or stealthzerg. But without soloers the small groups went away. Without small groups the weak 8mans went away etc. You can't have a healthy, sustained PvP population with so few options.

Everyone goes on and on and on and on about "How do we get more players into RvR?"

The problem here is a core "elitism" culture. In certain circles on this server otinanai because you don't have rr9+ toons in your sig from the right "elite" guild on the server your post is irrelevant, your opinion is irrelevant, and you aren't even worth speaking too.

The whole culture of RvR revolves around the same 4-5 guilds who mix players and all know each other. Nobody else goes out during those hours because it is all 8v8 only against these same groups of people. The same people who have said "just zerg" will the first to call you a noob for doing so.

RvR has to become more varied for it to be any fun for more then the "elite" circle.

How about, you allow the elite guilds to have their own zone the, and the pugs who cannot field an 8 man of the same people in TS day after day can then go to emain. Two different frontiers for two different classes of players. All of the elite guilds can have their area and everyone else can go and have fun.

Nobody is interested in going to emain to get farmed and even if you wipe the server nothing will change if the culture doesn't change.
There will be a group of people out there who will want this realm to be entirely Mythic-like. Exactly like vanilla, drop rates/xp rates, basically everything and you will not be able to please them unless it is exactly like vanilla.

These people have their nostalgia goggles on so tight it's cutting off the bloodflow to their brain and they believe that vanilla was perfect and nothing was wrong with it.

If high realmranks is such an issue, why isn't a cap imposed?

Don't tell me because it isn't live-like; Mythic never reset their servers because of too many high RR.

In addition, less than 5% of players were > RR6 at time of NF.
To Uthgard community: Would you be in favor of a RR cap? If so, what is reasonable to you? (My thoughts are ~RR7)

Worst thing about all this is the reason why it will happen. While the staff will say some bullshit like "we have been discussing this for quite a while", truth is that reasons for this are a) first sign of competition and b) qq on forum(from players that move as the wind blows anyway, if other server offers them better toys, they will go there). Never ever have they listened to anyone that's invested time and effort instead of qq. If they've tried to keep the server up, gave it a month or two, maybe tried re-implementing some features we all liked and well, if that didn't work and some people didn't go back here from origins, then I would understand the staff saying: "we'll do a wipe". But this has nothing to do with it, they gave in to people that won't be good at the game or try to improve even if we have 10 server wipes + they panicked like little girls just because some competition is out. One week of low population and they run like little girls...pathetic, there is simply no other word. It would make me puke, but I haven't eaten yet today :).

Even if they decide on not doing the wipe, I'm done with this place. I've realized yesterday that the way these people think makes you believe robots might have a soul, but staff here doesn't. Their goal is their server, it's their pet project of a few nerds that want to see how well can they emulate a computer game. Players are here to surve their purpose as puppets/tools, that's all. Still, I have no regrets, met plenty of nice people here and all in all it was a good run. See you all(friends and enemies) in Camelot unchained :).

The warm intimacies of small, kindly things, the sentiments and delicious trivialities that make up so much of civilized men's lives were meaningless to him. A wolf was no less a wolf because a whim of chance caused him to run with the watch-dogs. Bloodshed and violence and savagery were the natural elements of the life Conan knew; he could not, and would never, understand the little things that are so dear to civilized men and women."
