Ok I just started DaoC as usual and it automatically updated via downloading 5 files....only to crash. So I started it again and this time, it downloads only 2 files...but wont stop crashing....and keep crashing, with no chance to stop the update or do ANYTHING else...

EXCEPTION

System.UnauthorizedSystemException: Access to the path (<enter DaoC portal folder here>) is denied.
at System.IO.__Error.WinIOError(Int32 errorCode, String maybeFullPath)
at System.IO.File.Delete(String path)
at Updater.Program.Main(String[ ] args)

Any ideas? :?

Seems like Portal is trying to delete some old files but isn't allowed.
You could try running as administrator, see if that helps.
(Right click -> Run as Administrator)

Perhaps the folder or some of the files that it's trying to delete are in use?
You could try closing all your folders/unnecessary programs before trying to patch it.
Besides that I can't quite think of any other common issues with file deletion.

Also I'm sorry for saying this but as someone who works in IT I simply can't stop myself from asking:
Have you tried rebooting?

Besides that the only thing I can think of might be that the files are read-only or something.
You could just reinstall Portal, it's not that big. :)

LoL I guess I just found another workaround : I tried to start the updater and the update itself froze....so daoc portal doesnt crash...certainly not very elegant....but very effective

NOW I was able to switch auto update off - works normal again

I am having this same exact issue. It just started this past Friday. It started at the same time on all of our computers.... my wife's and my desktops, running Windows XP seem to be the ones that keep having the problem. I have done all of the things talked about above, and the only way I can get it to work (sometimes) is to run system restore to a previous save point. That only works until the next day when it starts over again. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Portal, that also did not work.

Please, someone from Uthgard staff... did you guys do something to change Portal? This suddenly started and happened on more than one computer in our household. It's really difficult to figure out how to log in. :wall:

Please help!

Ironically, an update was made to the updater to make updating easier. Disable your antivirus, reboot, then try updating again. Do you have administrator privileges to install programs? The program needs to be able to overwrite files in C:\program files\DAOC Portal

I am not running any anti-virus at this point, it was not running when this began.

I am running xp, and yes I have full access to install programs as i am the only user of this computer and have been for years.

Thank you for the attempt, but I'm afraid those are not the problems. Nothing has changed on my computer, this just started up this past weekend as it did for several others I have talked to. I wish I were more tech savy to be able to troubleshoot, but I am not. Currently I am doing as an earlier post suggested and running the portal.update manually from the program file, letting it crash with an error, then closing it and that allows me to use Portal. It's not glamorous and I would prefer that it actually work properly the way it had before, but this is how I am able to keep playing with my friends.

As always, thank you for keeping Uthgard up and running, I love DAOC and I really appreciate being able to play it without TOA.

My friend had the same issue yesterday, even with her anti-virus off.
We tried the suggestion in the other thread:
Remove the Update.Updater.exe/Update.Portal.exe, rename the Updater.exe and run it.
Didn't make much sense at first, but it did the trick.
