Took me a long time to figure this out but where there's a will there's a way. The basic idea is that you have a copy of Windows XP and Vmware. You can install windows xp on an external harddrive if you do not have space and run VMware to access windows. This will not work with Windows 7 only Windows Xp and maybe vista.
Here are the quick steps! 1 Download VMware Workstation: Run Multiple OS Including Linux & Windows7, on Virtual Machines 2 Download Microsoft Windows XP as an .iso (windows 7 will not work, vista may) 3 Choose to create a new machine within vmware workstation, choose the .iso you downloaded as your boot disc. 4 Make sure you let the box use at least 2gb of ram 5 Go through the install process of windows xp 6 Install Vmware tools 7 Install directx 9 8 Install .net 3.5 9 Install the Visual C++ 2008 redistributable package 10 Install Daoc from official site 11 Instal Daoc portal 12 Make sure to direct Daoc portal to the folder where Daoc is installed other wise you'll get an error when trying to hit play. That's it!!! You can now run daoc and not use bootcamp and you don't have to dedicate a large portion of your main harddrive to windows. I hope this helps out future mac users who want to get back in the game! |

This thread is somewhat about the same issue, so I figured it would be useful to link to it here:

Just an add on to this guide. If your camera spins like crazy in Vmware when playing, turn off mouse acceleration on your mouse drivers, and set Vmware to "Always optimize mouse for games" in preferences. Enjoy!

I tried to make it work with a clean CrossOver 12.5.0 version, and this is how it went down for me:
The main difference between older versions and CrossOver 12+, is that 12+ supports .NET 4.0 if you ever need that. [edit] I ran into some strange issues using DAoC Portal and finally figure out what it was. With Little Snitch you should only allow access to http://www.dolserver.net through port 80 TCP, and not allow any other stuff through port 80. As an example when you click on 'Uthgard' it wants to access herald.uthgard.net through port 80. If you allow that, daoc portal will freeze, so you have to block it. The best thing is actually to block port 80 entirely, and use a cached server-list, since there is no way to turn off this so called 'feature' (same with the google ping), without decompiling. I tested it once, used bootcamp + Windows 7, worked perfect. But for some reason my MB was getting way too hot while playing.

Been working pretty well for me i was getting some frame lag but had to manual edit vmware to allocate more video memory.
to do this right click on your Windows Xp Home edition and select show package content. Than edit your Windows xp home edition .vmx file with your text edit and add this line at the bottom svga.vramSize = "20971520" your frame lag should go away now make sure Vmware is not running when you make an edit. |
