I'm just an idiot!
I realize now that a lot of the frustrations and problems I was having were solved by "cleaning" out previous configuration files. You're right Kroko, the syntax was fine the way it was. My problems stemmed from trying to re-use daoc preference files and such. My suggestion to others who have been following along (are you nuts?)..... Each time you try something, make sure to CLEAN OUT previously created configuration files. Obviously if you start with a fresh wine prefix anything there is taken care of UNLESS you are like me and are trying to backup your daoc prefs to keep from having to setup your keyboard and stuff again. Furthermore, attempts to run pieces of daocportal with mono will undoubtedly create configuration files for daocportal in your home directory (hidden, and also in .config). Delete these and try from a fresh start when things aren't working. If you are curious about that script that Kroko posted, only apply to a fresh installation of the OS it was intended for. (don't ask... lol) /shame BUST... the good news is that I was able to get up and running again from a fresh install on this partition in about an hour so that's not bad (considering the install and updates are a good 30 minutes of that). Last week my windows crashed and I got a series of BSODs reboot after reboot. I got exasperated and just put LInux back on my machine. I must play DAOC though!! Been trying all week.
I tried the script (also 12.10 ubuntu 64 bit, I tried to faithfully duplicate), amazing work and I thank you. I have also tried Mint and Debian and manually doing everything like I did last time I got DAoC working in Linux (years ago, 7.10 and 8.04 ubuntu I think it was). I can't get it working though. Thank you so much for this thread. I am learning lots. Is there perhaps a condensed set of steps any of you could post here? In addition to that amazing script I mean? Also maybe an easy way to clean out my wine? Or to reinstall a fresh wine without reformatting and reinstalling ubuntu each time (its getting old hehe)? Or a link to a good article about it? I am just going nuts. Sorry I sound so stupid, I had a pretty good grasp on linux years ago, but have since fallen back into the dumb. Andie. |

Off topic, but I dont know that you'll find Linux to be easier than Windows xD |

Linux is lots easier on most things for me actually. Playing DAoC in linux used to be easy too!!! Something in DAOC Portal changed though, now its not as easy. I may have to give up and dual boot, or install a 32 bit linux (grrr). I hope to just have this small difficult period behind me, and things will be easy again and keep using 64 bit linux only, no more windows.
The only reason I switched back to Windows for awhile was due to my partner, she hated linux. I relented. We are not partners anymore though ![]() |

After several long grueling days, I finally got 3.5 dot net and DAoC Portal working well enough in a Debian Wheezy (64-bit) install. I am downloading the game client now but thought I would post some success. I couldn't beleive winetricks actually successfully installed all of the dot net versions one by one all the way up to 3.5 (sp1) by itself!!!! It was such a remarkable feeling to see it working!!! Now I just have the graphics to deal with and I should be back in the game, in Linux. Thank goodness and thanks again to those in this thread.
Just a note to other linux users with problems: if you run out of options and no one else will help you, please PM me I can try! ![]() |
