the portal opens as usual, then goes straight into an update, and then I get a noise and a popup box:

System.UnauthorizedAccessException: Access to the path 'E:\Program Files\DAoCPortal\Portal.exe' is denied.
at System.IO.__Error.WinIOError(Int32 errorCode,String maybeFullPath)
at System.IO.File.Delete(String path)
at Updater.Program.Main(String[] args)

This has not been a previous problem in the month or so I have been playing on Uthgard. Up until now everything has worked fine.

In the properties of the desktop icon I switched it to run as Administrator and that does not make any difference.

What DAoCportal you use? Any version below 2.8 requires a start with admin rights to let it update.

You can also setup DAoCportal with newest setup as instructed in How to connect. Make sure you uninstall your old version first.

using 2.8b

guess I will try to reinstall it.

edit: reinstalled same version. different location, in fact different disk drive. same error.

win 7 pro, sp1, installed uthgard on March 4 everything has been working just fine until this occurred and I made this post.

edit again: oddly, the patch notes say 2.8c but the program says 2.8b. is the change to 2.8c as of yesterday? if that's the case, then that's what created the problem.

does anyone know how to contact the party(s) involved with writing the code for the patch from 2.8b to 2.8c?

Try deleting Portal.exe manually, and then just running Updater.exe
Be nice. :)

I have the exact same problem.

I had a problem with my launcher earlier, then it got fixed, and now it's broken again :(

Nvm, thanks TheKrokodil. Think that worked.

I finally got it working. Here is my mickey mouse workaround, i'm at work so this is from memory might be slight errors but gets point across:

double click update.Portal
program opens and asks if it is ok for program to make changes to hard drive
click "no"
long error message pops up

but the key is, that portal *does not close* at any point which was my ongoing problem. so i ignore the error message, click on the portal and start Uthgard. 2 days in a row now I've been able to play using this method.

maybe I will try the solution suggested above when i get home tonight.

Why are you clicking no? The updater needs to be able to replace the portal.exe on the hard drive.

if i click yes then the update starts and i get the failure mentioned in the initial post

edit: yeah i tried deleting portal.exe and running updater. all that does is download portal and then go back to the same problem. the only solution is what i posted just above this.

I've tried deleting portal.exe and redownloading the portal client and installing it this way...neither way works. The only solution I can currently get to work is the one posted above. If a solution is found I'd appreciate an update, I'm getting the same errors that have been posted above and I always run in admin.

Funny thing is, my client now says it's v2.8c however when I click on a direct shortcut of portal.exe, I get the same error as before...so I have no other option except to run the updater from the program folder then cancel the update, even though my client is up to date.

Eternitys - If were allowing custom changes, why would the staff choose to remove a very very good and highly accepted custom change such as barrels? Then on top of that, use the "it's livelike" excuse as a reason for removing them? If staff are so concerned about livelike and that's the direction the staff wish to go, I'd fully support a 100% livelike server. However if there are custom changes on the server, then using the "livelike" excuse is being nothing more then hypocritical.

Fyi, the problem is solved. A friend of mine had the same problem and passed it on to me.

SOLUTION:
i had this as well, go into the folder after you get the error message and you should see two new files that are named something like Update.Portal.exe and Update.Updater.exe

Renamed the originals of these files (Portal.exe and Updater.exe) to whatever you want, then rename the update. versions of the files to remove the 'update.'

That fixed it for me, it was just a problem accessing the files direct (even with admin permission).

I have zero problems now after this.
