I don't know if there's a thread about this already, but whatever. When I open the portal, enter a username and password, and press play, I get an error message saying: "connect.exe has stopped working." I don't know what else I can do to get it to work so I'm asking for help. Any advice is appreciated. I use Windows 7 64-bit and I have more than enough RAM and hard drive space. Nothing wrong with my video card as I play other games.

Just update your DAoC Portal to the latest version (2.8c)

I downloaded the .bat file and properly edited it. Tried to launch using that. No luck. I've uninstalled and reinstalled a few times. Tried updating the portal via the help dropbox. Nothing happened. I even took the time to defragment my hard drive, but that was long overdue. Every time I try to launch, the same box pops up. "Connect.exe has stopped working." I just checked the portal settings and I didn't point it to the game folder. It seems to be working now. Stupid mistake on my part.

You should first try to get it working with the out of the box portal. If that works you can bother with batch files. Make sure you installed .NET 3.5

You best bet is to uninstall existing portal, redownload and install again.
