I was goofing around with Windows-8 pro the other day. Just for kicks I loaded it on a machine. Not a big fan of it but that's not important.

So after installing the daoc and portal client, I attempt to launch portal. As you know it requires .NET v2 or better. The portal client doesn't think Win8 has it installed. Win8 has v4.5 natively as I understand it so "technically" it should run. Portal prompts you to download/install v2. However the link for it is no longer there. No big surprise.

Has anyone tried this yet? Is there some compatibility option? It's not a big deal as I'm still running it on my MBP(bootcamp) with Win7 just fine. This is more curiosity than anything else.

On a side note and I know it's been asked before but has anyone been able to run daoc in linux? I've tried before and actually got it to mostly work but the mouse pointer always freaked out or the polygons were a bit flakey. Once again, more curious than anything else.

there are several frameworks at play

For all features of daocportal, install 3.5 sp1 http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download ... aspx?id=22. If you use that link on Windows 8, it will redirect to the windows feature installer Blue has shown

I tested DAOC Portal and DAOC on a Windows 8 computer. Works like a charm, if you follow the installation instructions.

I can confirm DAoC Portal 2.7/2.8 and the client (1.113 with a downgraded 1.109 game.dll) working on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, using Wine 1.5.16 dev (although the 1.4.1 stable has also been reported working). However, you will have to install the appropriate .NET packages using Winetricks since Mono doesn't cut it in this case. Also, Winecfg lets you force the mouse cursor into the window (yes, a Wine desktop + fullscreen setting in-game works a lot more stably than the client's own window mode does).

It's been quite a while since I set all this up. I might actually have forgotten some details, but feel free to /query me on Qnet (Fortyseven) when you try it out and I'll do my best to walk you through the setup.

The link Abydos sent that installs the earlier version worked like a charm. Now if I can just get the silly KMS server to allow activation. lol..

I'll give the ubuntu/wine setup a try as well for fun.

Right, I've found this report on WineHQ. Fairly outdated, but those were the only 2 issues I remember experiencing - pixel shader issues and the disappearing mouse cursor. Check the bottom of the page for a mouse hack.

Warpi, what installation instructions are you referring to for windows 8?

I downloaded the game from the link on this website. Patched it and it will only load the game partway and then kick me out. It does this even when I patch it again using DAOC portal.

I even tried redownloading the game again to my windows 7 laptop and transferring the entire DAOC folder to my win8 desktop and then i get the error that I cannot connect to update server.

I am baffled..Any insight or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Does your user have admin rights? this stopped me at first.

I had just installed windows 8 shortly before I downloaded DAOC so I hadn 't really messed with the settings. I think my son turned the administrator rights off. Its bizzare that when I copy it from a computer where it works to one with win8 it won't work. I will check the administrator rights when I get home. I tried running the launcher as Administartor and that didnt help.

I took the administrator account off my Win8 computer and it did work.

I have a DAOC live account as well. The DAOC launcher wil not connect to that on either computer. I guess thats a mute point since I don't play the live.
