... if you kill the mobs around their spot.

Was/is this the case on live, or not? (It is that way in some other games)

Spawner have min/max contents of a spot. So if max is reached nothing is spawned. So I can imagine that you have to kill mobs to get certain others spawned. But some are really coded to spawn only when other mobs are killed: e.g. Beli.
It's done when it's done. Thanks for your patience.

Myth: Beli is a triggered spawn

Go on live and just stand there for like 30 hours in DF. Eventually you'll see the message :p

Oh ok. I found a Grab Bag confirming this:

Q. My friends and I were talking because Beliathan the worm spawned in DF, what's the mechanism for his spawn? None of us know, is it just a random chance or is it something like the Queen where you have to kill certain mobs in order for it to pop? Or is there some silly CSR sitting somewhere thinking to himself...WORM TIME! Please slate my curiosity and let us all know.

A. With a soft chuckle the Lady of the Jewels /yelled: Worm time! I love it! After some research it’s been discovered that Beliathan is just a very rare and random spawn. He is not affected by the death of other monsters in the area.

Lilith, however, is a triggered spawns.

On live, *most* mob spawns are random. There are very, very, very few triggered spawns on live.

Balor, for example, is a triggered spawn (as well as some other mobs in the dungeon).
Not sure about Alb/Mid dungeons but I suspect a similar mechanic.

I'm not aware of any classic-world triggered spawns that are not quest mobs.

Some trophy mobs and quest mobs had place holders often had to kill several of a mob type to get the mob you wanted to spawn at some point.

I vaguely remember a named weeping willow mob with an OTD in Myrkwood Forest that had a % chance of spawning, often you'd need to clear the entire camp a few times before it would spawn (instead of one of the weeping willows), the worst part was that it was a night spawn only! Took days to get it to spawn. I can't seem to find any evidence it ever existed, but i know it did as I killed it to get an item for my first ever Thidranki kit pre SI :P
