Hello all! I've been away from DAoC for quite a while now, and I've only recently come across this freeshard, which so far has been a wonderful blast from the past. :) I decided to start up in Albion and I had a couple concerns regarding mercenaries that I hope someone can help me with.

I returned to Camelot with the intention of running a solo tank in RvR, and I was wondering if mercenary would be a good choice for something like that. A Saracen, thrust-specced merc is what I'm currently looking at, so I would greatly appreciate it if someone could offer a bit of insight or guidance. I'd hate to hit level 50 only to find out that I wasted my time.

Thanks in advance!

Merc is one of the strongest solo tanks because this char can spec shields for slam, some points for parry and of course the fumble ability.

Saracen thrust would be my choice to because you arent that vulnerable to str/con debuff of assassins like crush or slash.

Thanks, Ronian. :) Just wanted to make sure I wasn't gimping myself before I got in too deep.

Depends on your favourite taste. Of course non shield spec ogre merc with crush spec makes really good damage too (4.3 weapon vs 3.9 weapon) and you get access to the really nice anytime combo stun combo to start a side chain.

I'm a Slash/Shield Mercenary that primarily does solo rvr. Back when I was RR4L2 and finished with Thid I switched my RAs from Det into Charge2-Ip2 (at RR4L5 got Purge1). I also used haste charges, str/con barrels, str barrels, and dex/qui barrels and did quite well in solo fights.
I did try grouping at this time and found myself not liking all except 1 group I'v ever done, but to help get RR5L5 for Purge2 even moreso at this time in the server you'll probably want to group to get those rps.

Groups will just roll right over you whereever you are and they may be, you'll run through a milegate and have a group of many rangers all shoot you with arrows and nightshade or 2 unstealth on you so I highly advise if you make it through amg Emain, gtfo of amg and stay away from it.

Aside from learning to dw/shield swap quick and accurately and learning to time positionals with this new combat delay thing so that you actualy get the style off after slam and moving to their side it's not to hard to solo with Merc.

Monday night I spend a few hours rvr and get 4 solo fights (only actualy 2 people though :\) and logged out realy happy. So if your not going to be a stealther expect that :)

Most stupid idea ever.

This shard just isnt made for visable soloers, cause of the big crowd of moronic idiots.

Go for Infil and get happy. You dont even have to style with viper3.

Edit:

Lol @ shield spec. Hi @ purge3

... and dont tell me about numb trick. If you are unbelievable lucky and find anyone solo he isnt that stupid to fall for it.

Solo wasn't bad for me Tuesday night (didn't get on wednesday). Won 8 out of 12 fight's over the course of playing in Emain for 2 and a half hours. And to your numb/purge thing. I don't use the numb trick so I don't know about that, but I can tell you not everyone has purge3 for sure (many of those 12 fights I recently had purge wasn't even used so they may have used recently as well).

I wonder how many people would blow 15 points for purge3 under RR9 as well. Doesn't seem worth it imo. Would rather use those for MoParry3 (no MoParry skill atm and I still love how much I parry with left over points +15 from gear/realm rank) and perhaps MoPain2.

I don't play at Uthgard's primetime, so sure I wouldn't expect for someone to try and go to Emain then either. Last two sessions I had since starting to RvR again groups have been a bit more friendly letting me live for awhile until inc for them dies I guess then they roll me :\ but nice to have that extra time they left me lol.

Sadly I did.

@ Caedius

Its possible that Ive gained such bad experiences soloing because I tried to run solo at "primetime", which means 4pm-8pm GMT. But anyway, in several hours I didnt met one enemy who didnt purge my stun, so the only ones Ive found solo were some rangers, ns, sb and warriors (rr8+ ).

I would love to say different things, cause I love soloing, but on this shard it just ****** me off. It would be possible to get some nice runs with the old ra system.

"Most stupid idea ever"?
Nice response is that the standard Uthgard mentality?

Those are just the bitter forum trolls that cant handle the game or the enemys, so they vent here.

Just wanted to prevent him from doing mistakes, or just thinking that soloing would be easy. Thats the reason I've chosen that drastic words.

@ Corwinn

I can handle that game pretty well, but I had to change my attitude. Now I just zerg like the brainless rest here.
