*Update* (14.01.2009 18:50 (GMT +1))
We are now online with a new machine and new HDD. Have fun! --- *Update* (14.01.2009 18:00 (GMT +1)) The Windows setup is finished and the configuration and installation of additional software is in progress. The chances for this evening are good. --- *Update* (13.01.2009 20:14 (GMT +1)) We're missing the ethernet driver for the new server, because it is not available. Therefore we need assistance of a manitu technician. As they're only working at usual business times we will have to wait until tomorrow morning. The server won't be online before 14.01.09 14:00 (GMT +1). --- *Update* The server has been shut down now for the maintance. We should be online again in a few hours. --- We're online again! Unfortunately only temporarily, because the system currently is in another server and has to be migrated to our own one. This means to set up and install the system again. This process will take a couple of hours. We can't say when exactly it will be, but it will definitely happen tomorrow, on the 13.01.2009 (GMT +1). Unfortunately we could not restore the files on the harddrive and had to inject a backup of 07.01.2009 (16:10 GMT +1) which throws us back for around 9 hours. The Uthgard team wishes you fun while playing here! ![]() Edit: Nothing will be lost when you play now. We will shutdown Uthgard tomorrow and transfer the database to a new server. The problematic sector on the HDD is reserved by an unused file. There will also be another backup in some hours. Last edited by Nayru on Jan 14, 2009 19:04, edited 3 times in total.

does that mean anything we do now will be lost again or do you use the lastest data once you switch back?
|
|
good question.

I guess they save data be4 getting the server down, and then all saved for the new server

i dont get that. not at all. the HDD was shot. manitu set up a new server. while they where doing that, you set up on a temp server with a backup file from 7th january which we are currently playing on - on a new HDD or the old? now manitu is setting up yet another server, which you will migrate to from the temp server? why is the problematic sector on the shot HDD blocked by a ghostfile? that HDD should have been trashed already. forgive me for asking, i just dont get the logic behind this. |

It wasn't the HDD which caused the crashing, it was the server itself.
So we got a new server with the old DB in it for the time being, so that we didn't have to reinstall everything (the DB was damaged due to the instant poweroff/bluescreen) Be nice. :)

There is lots of contradiction between what the staff members are saying, first it was the HDD, now the server was causing the crash? Was it leaky memory? bad mobo? Driver issue? and placing a placeholder file in a bad sector on a hard disk is a bandaid for a bigger problem. seems the server hosting co. (manitu) needs to fix these issues, not mask them off. In another month or 2 this could simply happen again. I don't want to come off as bashing the staff, I love the fact you've brought DAoC to us and the time you've all put in to Uthgard is nothing short of amazing. I'm having a hard time understanding how a hosting co finds it suitable not to replace faulty hardware. this coming from a sysop and a former employee of a hosting facility ![]() |

We're not the technicians in the data center, so we can almost only guess, until we hear facts from the hoster. The harddrive indeed crashed, but that crash was not caused by a hardware defect, but by an immediate server shutdown. The harddrive contained (and until now still contained) bad sectors and files. That's the reason for this shutdown -> "New" server.
