Gonna roll up an Alt just to help zerg bust in DF or relic raids. I dont care about group viability as I have a Healer and Berserker if I want groups. I loved seeing tons of hammers back in the day so kinda leaning towards Thane. I just want to know which class has better AoE potential Thane or a RC RM. According to char planner lvl45 Thane AoE is 163d and lvl44 RM AoE is 158d. But is there anything else that factors into that that makes one better than the other?

RM is better so you die faster and don't break as much CC.

RM casts much faster and got more power and piety.

But really it boils down to: what do you want to rain from the sky? Spears or Hammers?

The only thing I'd suggest is that if you do go for RM, go dark over RC. The self debuff on the AE nuke is pretty sweet, and can put you on equal levels with the Thane hammers without sacrificing the additional piety/dexterity.

AE plus slamn is too good to pass up. vs AE plus quicker to die.

Thane 50 here.

RM's AoE has a 3s cast time, Thane's AoE is supposed to have a 4s cast time (but is currently at 3s due to an oversight, probably).
RM can benefit from Acuity buff, Thane cannot.
RM can crit and have caster RAs.
RM has more Piety and Dex.
RM has Focus (makes it use less Power) and Quickcast.

And that's pretty much it. If you just want to AoE during keep fights, go RM.

See no one has mentioned it yet.

RC RM has bolts and GTAEO aswell, both very nice for keep warfare.

I expressed a common opinion of Thanes as a joke. Sorry it offends you so much :p.

Do you have an opinion for the OP's question?

Go thane. Aoe hammers are great.Silly People just like repeating what other silly people say.. The damage and speed you lose in aoe you make up in survive-ability.Slam, chain, greater hp, purge, and IP make up for The fact that you dont do the same damage as an RM . Its balance =). Thane is truly a tank mage =) build it with plenty of dex/pie and you will not be disappointed. dont listen to these disappointed nerds. Most of these fools with 8v8 mentality arent that great to begin with. and are trying to relive some strange glory day that honestly i dont think really ever existed. anywho. All classes have a place in this game and all classes can succeed play what you love

Thane here.

Only situation where the AoE is kind of useful is during keep fights, where your chain armor and shield don't really play a role since there aren't many archers on Uthgard. You roughly die as quickly as a RM on a spell assist, despite the HP difference. That AoE can't be buffed, meaning that it ends up doing about 110 damage on the main target if it has energy resist buff (very often against Alb, less often against Hib); and with a 4 seconds cast time (once it gets fixed), that's like nothing. Basically it isn't much more than a beautiful interrupt tool, that you can't cast for very long because of the low power pool.

This isn't even about 8vs8 (Runecarving RM won't be grouped for 8vs8 either), if you want to kill stuff with AoE spells, go with RM.
