As an RVR newb I was wondering if someone could post some of the more common items with charges that people use in rvr and what those charges do?

Damage add, Damage shield, S/C, Dex/quick, etc.

I'm planning on eventually getting into the solo pvp scene and i would like advice from those with more experience than myself.

That depends on your char OFC. But s/c charge is nice to have on every solo character tho hard to get on albion. Solo casters/Scouts/thrust infils or block dependant chars should charge d/q.
Spec af is also pretty good, especially since most of the solo players are melee.
The dd charge is more of a grp thing, rather use a dot charge from either befanas seal or the dommel necklace for more dps

75 AF charge 2min RUT from epic torso
75 s/c charge 2min RUT from Legion cloak / gem / neck
150 MHB 2min RUT from cloak (alb) / bracer (hib) / midgard dont know

That's the absolute minimum you need.
Dependend on your char you should also think about
75 d/q charge 2min RUT from dragon ring (alb) / pooka mantle (hib) / mid dont know

Pots:
14 % haste pot
30 d/q pot

Nice to have
Dot Charge 1min RUT from Dommel's Necklace in DF (I use it every fight if I dont recharge MHB)

Then you need plenty of lvl 40 health pots / endureg3 pots.

But actually I wouldn't recommend to solo at all, it gets boring quite quickly and you won't learn anything from it for real RvR.
Join grps in RvR, small man at the beginning then full groups.
You will need less equipment, rank up faster and have more fun.

For grp RvR you just need
75 AF charge 2min RUT from epic torso
DD charge with low RUT from alb I dont know / ring of elements hib / some cheap bracer in midgard
Plenty of power pots or endureg / enduinsta as melee.
