My situation is the opposite; I’m a developer looking for someone or some group of people with an “idea.” I didn’t play Dark Age too much, only from about 2003-2005 and off and on but it meant a lot to me all those years ago. I have gone to 3 different freeshards offering assistance in the development process over 2 months ago and received no reply. Even though I develop business applications for a living, everything has been transferable to how DoL works. I know this makes me sound conceited, but I am damn good at what I do. Is there anyone with descent knowledge of what a server should be like to mimic a truly classic feel? I know the quickest answer to this: “don’t make another freeshard, the portal doesn’t need any more classic servers” or “You’re wasting your time” etc etc but I’m kind of tired of sitting back and doing nothing and watching the idea of a genuine classic server die. Since I can’t get any luck joining one, creating one is the only next logical step (insert smart-ass reply). I have been able to deploy it to a remote server (my 1g ram slice of the internet), create custom NPC’s, got a mob to run around a corner (was hacked in, can’t take too much credit because it wasn’t actual path-finding), wrote a console app that manages mob loot, wrote custom tables that interact with existing processes (nothing more than a place to hold text in a message box, just did it when testing) and integrated MS-SqlServer into a fully functional implementation inheriting from the base Object database class(impractical, just did it for the fun of it). So I’m by no means an expert on how to build a freeshard, those things are pretty minimal. I do however have little to no learning curve left on the backend of things. I do have a learning curve with DAoC though. I downloaded all the old prima guides and the atlas and I want to re-construct it but they don’t have enough information to piece 2003-era together. I’m not even so sure I would want to make it public as I have no intentions of gaining a large crowd, for me this is nothing more than a “digital restoration” project and if only me and a few other people see it, that’s fine with me, I just plain love to code and am looking for a project on my free-time. I just don’t have the info or right direction, is there anyone with world building experience or a lot of “classic” daoc knowledge they could enlighten me with? I have a general idea of how Albion worked (PvE) but I didn’t really play any other realms. If so please send in a PM, or at least PM me with a way to contact you. Or, if anyone knows of a project up and running and they are looking for a developer, please let me know. Any constructive info would be appreciated Thank you
With a wall of text like this im sure you have amazing skills at programming.

I finally got it. This gif is totally the forums for the last 2 years... I just have not figured out the representations yet... May I ask how one achieves INVADER status on the forums? Or at least what it means?

Funny though how it was here way back in 2006 or so and up to date without SI, and now it takes years and years to replicate the same thing. It's done fellas, Uthgard was brought down for a reason. The one dude who runs it was tired of it.

You fail to understand what these freeshards are about. They are not about getting a game up and running. They are not about the players having access to a version of the game without bugs. They are about having fun coding/programming. Hence, if all the fun is in coding/programming, then you threaten to take away their fun by doing some of the coding/programming yourself. Thus, you will not get any serious response about your offer to help. Heck, the more "skills" you have at coding/programming, the bigger the threat you become. So, you see, the developers see this as THEIR project, and YOU aren't allowed in. The object isn't to get the game open as fast as possible with as few bugs as possible. The object is to have lots of fun tinkering with the code. Why do you think there are so many freeshard servers instead of the developers coming together to make one really good freeshard server? Duh. I know, I know, you come here thinking this is a game and we're going to play it one day and that must really be the goal of the project, but you would be mistaken.

Oh look, someone bothered to put the website back up. That means they are really still working on it and there is hope to see the server online just in time for my retirement.

[3:10pm] <myrmidon^> You have to be a c*** to be awesome at daoc [3:10pm] <myrmidon^> that's what I learnt [3:11pm] <Frosty_> then why does austerim suck lordgriffon wrote:Oh by the way... ever seen a group of 8 smite clerics? Or play against a group like that? I have. Absolute devastation. The group that runs up against them can't kill them fast enough because smite clerics have sooooooo many tools at their disposal combined with decent ranged damage with 8 of them dudes doing it!
