Exactly 3 years ago Uthgard's server concept was put down to paper. Those who are with us for some time now might remember that Uthgard was a follow-up to the Camelotserver project - which at that time concentrated purely on a role-playing server - today known as Abendwind.

Throughout all the years there were a lot of ups and downs. However, Uthgard is still in the business and thus the oldest freeshard project (together with Abendwind).
Therefore, we want to express our thanks to all those who have helped to form Uthgard in its present state. Thanks also goes to the community which has stayed true to Uthgard throughout all this time (and hopefully will in the future) as well as to all members of the staff and all GameMasters who actively helped in bringing this project forward. Special thanks go to our active staff as well as to Rösti, Bamu Andokay aka Loki, LordExecute (Abendwind), Presto and Kendor (founder of Camelotserver).

For interested people here is the old concept. Please, remember that only Classic and Shrouded Isles existed at that time. Things like RvR sickness (topic 3) were still foreign concepts.

Concept for Uthgard (January 6th, 2004)

Well, after long discussions I am going to post the official server concept. Perhaps, it is not completely finished - so, I will update this thread when needed. The PvP shard is based on existing DAoC features and tries to improve and add to them. Here we go:

First of all it should be noted that ALL 3 realms will be taken over (at least their main zones). SI areas will be deactivated, because the world would be too big. Based on player population we might consider opening up epic dungeons at later times. Here are some details:

- Emain Macha will be the main event zone. You might think "Well... do Hibs have to walk there?" The answer is: "No. Hibernia will get Dun Crauchon as teleporter keep which can't be attacked." I guess we are going to do the same in the other frontiers since Hibernia would be short of one keep. The center of action, however, will be Emain.

- Additionally, there will be the possibility of a realm invasion. The guards at the portal keeps can be defeated. More secifically, this means that a number of players will be able to open the gates to enter enemy territory. Those who succeed are free to attack EVERYTHING they find until the enemy is pushed back. Of course, you are not allowed to buy anything in the enemy realms nor are you allowed to bind there. This may sound hard but the idea is that the proper realm has to work TOGETHER to drive back the aggressors. After people died they are only allowed to release into their OWN realm.

- People like me (having only 256 MB RAM) are extremely annoyed by porting to and from the RvR areas. So, after you die you will be ported to your teleporter keep instead. There you will receive a 3 minute stun, e.g. Playerspeed = 0. The exact implementation will be discussed later.

- The realm which owns most of the battlegrounds will receive a bonus. The effect of this bonus (as well as the relicts) is still undecided.

- Levelling will be improved by 25%. The main goal should be RvR.

- Realms with low population will receive an experience bonus. This is either done manually or by a script which calculates average populations.

- The drops of high-level mobs will have great importance. There will be some unique items but no random items like on Live DAoC.

- The next element are horses which can be controlled by the player. We are going to implement this easy feature (whic has been neglected by Mythic far too long). Only the price for the horses has still to be set.

OK, I hope this text has not grown too big. This concept is the result of an internal discussion between Loki, Razzer and myself. I am looking forward to your comments.

Regards, Rösti. Lead GM Development and Gamemaster for the PvP server.

Topics like realm invasion were quickly discarded. However, it's noticeable that in spite of changing personnel about 80% of this concept still holds. (Admittedly, some things took longer than expected.) This is all the more impressing when considering that many GMs and members of the staff have never been presented with this concept. Nevertheless, many things match our present concept.
