I made a minstrel and only ever specced into thrust, but when I hit lvl 8, my Instruments skill didn't level up, it stayed at 1. I read in another thread that every 4 levels (first at lvl8 ) there's a check but it seems to somehow not have triggered. The only thing that comes to mind that might have something to do with it is that I had +4 to Instruments (+2 shown as it was the max) at the time of leveling up.

Autotrain is custom here. If you spend points, it will cost you nothing

Oh, good to know. Must it be done at those exact levels (8, 12 ...) or can I do it later and it will still recognize it was "autotrained"?

At lvl 8, speccing to 2 in music will cost you nothing, at level 12, speccing to 3 will cost you nothing and so on. So at 48 all points should be "released" into your pool. You do not need keep music skill low. But you first get the points in return at 8,12,16 etc...

There is no need to auto train. You'll get the points regardless
