Can't connect

I've recently redownloaded Daoc (and Portal) and decided to start playing again, but I can't connect. It starts to load but then just says "hit esc to exit game" and that brings up the Daoc Client Diagnostic.

Any advice? I've followed the "how to connect guide".

Updating Portal fixed the problem.
