newbie questions: What is a respec? Is trading possible among players of different realms? (supposing they will not try to kill each other, of course)

Trading between realms is not possible. In most cases it wouldn't even make sense because items are realm-specific. Respecs enable you to redistribute the points which you have spent on your skills. There are three types of respecs: line (single skill), full (all skills), RA (your realm abilities). Happy hunting!
