But in the FH post, they say the intercepts are dependent on how close you stand to your pet, and having it right on top of you seems to give you 70%+ intercept. They also provide combat logs to back this up.

So which one is correct? the 50% here or the one on FH?

This?

I would put my money on the implementation here being correct.
Why:
That thread was from 2005, so the developers here could have easily found it with a google search as easily as I did.
That amount of logging is a joke. You would need something like 5000 attacks to get a reliable percentage.
There doesn't seem to be any real testing on distance:
I forgot to mention that. I put pet on Passive, Stay and stepped next infront of it. Reckon its abit further off in normal RvR, but not more then 100 units.

1.62: No real mention of mechanics behind this, except that the pets get better at it with higher versions.
- Spiritmaster pets, starting with the spirit soldier, now have a chance to take the melee attack for their controller. The chance increases up to the spirit champion. The caster must be standing close to the pet for this ability to be used.

A little more recent: http://www.postcount.net/forum/showthread.php?125717-Best-Pet-to-use-in-RvR
There was a remarkable difference in intercept rates;
Spirit Fighter - 10%, Spirit Soldier - 20%, Spirit Swordsman - 30%, Spirit Warrior - 40%, Spirit Champion - 50%
