Unable to login: "An error has occurred"

First post (have only been playing a few days!) so please go easy on me if I've missed anything stupid...

I used to play DAOC on Prydwen many years ago and figured I'd come have a go on the Freeshard but after creating my little bard the other day and just about starting to get used to things, I suddenly couldn't interact with any NPC's and on trying to relog to solve the problem, encountered the following:

"An error has occurred
and you were unable to connect"

I've been getting this consistently on my bard but have been able to log in on another character without problems (I've also tried logging the bard in on another machine in the house but get the same problem).

Can anyone offer any help?
