Hello DAoC fans! I am an old player who has just learned about free shards. I couldn't help but check this out, and I like what I see so far. I've been out of DAoC for a while now, and I am wondering what the community is like here on Uthgard, at least in a general sense. You see, although I loved the old 8v8 RvR back in the day, I am an old man now with a lot less patience for douchebaggery. That means offensive language, mistreatment of women, and the general selfish and disrespectful attitudes that you see rampant in games like World of Warcraft these days. I've read that this community has a lot of rules in regards to harassment and foul language, which is encouraging. Another thing that always bothered me was the "jadedness" of RvR players. I realize that you'll get this in every online community, but sometimes it becomes an overwhelming majority of the community. I guess what I am asking is, how is the community here on Uthgard different from the community of the official game in regards to "jadedness" and rudeness, generally speaking?

Also, how active is the RvR, particularly the 8v8? I don't mind zerging, but I can't stand deadness. Is the OF active, particularly in the evenings (PST time)?

Thanks ahead of time to anyone taking the time to respond to my inquiries. :)

There's hardly any hard language around here, simply due to the fact that hard language on public chat channels as well as insults towards other players might get you jailed or banned permanently. Having played Albion and Hibernia, I found most players to be quite mature and friendly although there's always some kids and people that need their daily dose of attention in the broad chat. Luckily, there's gathering places for their kind so you'll quickly learn which guilds to avoid.

The majority of the players is european so the PT on Uthgard is rather CET than PST. Since you're nine hours ahead, this would probably be something like 10am to 3pm for you. Can't tell what's going on after this since I've never been to RvR then. It's probably less and tbh, it's also not much during PT.

Ana pretty much summed it up. Majority of players are European. So if you can make it on during CET (Central European Time), then you'll have fun, and generally find plenty of action. I play on average 5 nights a week from 9 pm EST to around 1 pm EST , and its sometimes hard find "any" action much less 8v8. On rare ocassions i see some small group running around, but w/o enemies, that usually doesnt last long. We can only hope more North American players keep joining.

Thanks for the replies. It is interesting to me that, as a gamer and a techie, I've never heard of these free shards until recently. Of course, I haven't been involved in the daoc community (VN Boards, etc.) since I left the game years ago. I don't think that the free shards get much publicity, or there would probably be a lot more North American players.

If you were like me, you moved on at some point and started playing other games (WoW for me) or quit gaming all together. I didnt check vnboards like i used to when playing so im sure i missed when the chatter started about the free shards. It wasnt until i browsed to a board from my old daoc server that i found out about the free shards. The nostalgia sat in, and just hearing the music brought me back. Even though the poplulation isnt what i would like it to be, and the grind is tough at times, you still cannot beat DAoC pvp combat imho.

Well then you'll fit right in, cause anything else besides this is almost impossible.

Solo, duo, smallgroup are all almost non existent unless at low hours but even then FG's+ have to come to f up the fun.

eg.

Last night I was trying to solo in Thid, inbetween 2 solo fights I got steamrolled 4 or 5 times by a FG or 3infi's doing PA assist (overkill I'd say).

And its not like that I attack the FG's or leach them in 8vs8, not at all I even do /sit to let them know I'm there for 1vs1 and nothing more.

I don't get frustrated by dieing but the lack of respect that people have for other peoples playstyle and there precious need for RP.
(steamrolling solo's gives such a big reward  ).

None the less I'm grate full for the few people that do understand what /sit & /bow means and that they allow people having other play styles then their own.
