I'm having the same problems, too. I just upgraded to Win 7 Ultimate and the game will load fine into the character screen, then things get strange:

-My characters names are jumbled
-Character names are half cut off
-Characters, such as my warrior, are named neerlvl214war
-There is no image of a toon when I select a character
-If I attempt to log in, anyway, the screen goes black as if it's going to try to log in, but after a few moments nothing happens and it kicks me back to the character select screen.

I was running Windows XP SP 3 prior to this.

I've tried:
-Running as administrator
-Running in compatibility mode
-Making sure all graphics drivers are up to date
-Direct X is up to date
-I've toyed with game settings (Classic/Cat models, graphics, resolution)

I've not tried any of the 'ghetto' fixes mentioned above, as they aren't satisfactory, even if they would work. Has anyone had similar problems and found a legitimate fix?

EDIT: I think Mythic just patched to 1.104 June 23, 2010. (yesterday). Could that be causing the strange errors I'm receiving? That's the client version I'm using, as none of the tutorials I've seen really explain how to get a 1.9/1.91 client. I think the last one was written in 2006 or something.

The problems I'm having don't seem to be of the graphical variety, but something, somewhere, is failing to interpret things properly.

The problem was, in fact, the game version. The patch in the other thread
